Wendy Neisler re- ceived a $3,000 scholarship and Kevin Weisman received a scholarship for $5,000. The scholarships are awarded to approximately the top one- fourth of freshmen entering Elon College. They are based on high school course selection, class rank, grades, and SAT /ACT scores. Vi 3D NC 739-7021 June 8, 2000 Queen gets award at St. Michael’s Alex Queen was recently named the year 2000 recipient of the Mother Margaret Mary, RMS Award during the eighth grade graduation ceremony at St. Michael's Catholic School in Gastonia. The award, named for the first principal of the school, is given by the faculty and ad- ministration to the student who best demonstrates an eagerness to set goals and to work dili- gently to achieve them. In addi- tion to receiving a plaque, Queen was given a $100 savings bond as part of the award. Father John Allen also pre- sented Queen with the St. Michael's Parish Pastor's Awar4 for achieving the highest overall academic average. Additionally, Queen received individual awards for maintain- ing the highest academic per- formance in the subjects of Algebra I, Religion, English, - Spelling, Social Studies, Science, . Health and Computers. The President’s Award for Academic Excellence, given by the National Association of Middle School and Secondary Principals, was presented to Queen during the ceremony by Joseph Pucenta, St. Michael's principal. Queen is the son of Allen and Patsy Queen of Kings Mountain and will attend Charlotte Catholic High School this fall. Moore attends teaching Larry L. Moore of Kings Mountain, grades 7-9 French teacher at Southwest Middle School, recently attended a sem- inar at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. Moore was one of 13 North Carolina teachers participating in “Teacher Scholars in Residence.” Part of the University of seminar North Carolina, NCCAT pro- vides a year-round series of res- -idential seminars and teacher- scholar programs for teachers and professional development activities for teachers and staff in selected school systems. At the center, teachers engage in stimulating scholarly activities and professional networking to renew their vitality for teaching and learning. June activities at Arts Council The month of June will see a flurry of activity at the Cleveland County Arts Council in Shelby. On June 14, local woodcarver Steve Allen will host the month- ly Brown Baggin’ luncheon and lecture at the Arts Council, 111 S. Washington Street, Shelby. Allen will speak on woodcarv- . ing from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Bring your lunch and the Arts Council will provide the drink and dessert. Thursday, June 15, the Carolina Foothills Handmade Association will host its Spring Exhibition of fine handicraft, “Our Very Best”. The reception will take place from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m., and will run June 11 through 24. Saturday, June 17, fans of film making will get a chance to learn how a small film is shot. The first workshop, “Small Movies: Shooting With Super 8” will be held 7-9 a.m. and then again at 3-5 p.m. a the Arts Center. The classes are a pre- view of the big “Real to Reel Film and Video Festival” which the Arts Council will sponsor July 17-22. The Arts Council will hold its annual meeting June 20 at 5:30 p-m. Refreshments will be served. The event will include updates and a multimedia pre- sentation . The Greater Shelby Community Theater’s produc- tion of “Winnie the Pooh” will take place June 23, 24, 29, 30, and July 1 at 7:30 p.m. A mati- nee will be performed June 25 at 2:30 p.m. Other Arts Council news in- cludes announcement of last month’s Cleveland County Artists Competition. First Place went to Frank Barrow for his work “A Firm Grip”. Second Place was awarded to Jamie Willis for “Perpetual Perennials”. Third Place was awarded to Susan Carlisle Bell for “The Trees Clap Their Hands”. Se Also, the Cleveland County Arts Council is accepting appli- cations for the 2000-2001 Regional Arts Grant Scholarship Program. The dead- line for applications is Tuesday, August 1. The Regional Artist Project Grants Program pro- vides financial support for com- mitted, accomplished artists seeking to advance their careers as professionals. Artists must be a resident of either Anson, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Rutherford, Stanly, Union, or York counties since July 1, 1999. They must apply in the county where they reside. Funds are not available for pro- jects already completed. Students are ineligible for these grants. The Regional Artist Project Grants Program is supported by a grant form the N.C. Arts Council, a state agency, and funds are provided by partici- pating arts councils.
