Pictured from left to right; Assistant Chief Melvin Proctor, Chief Houston Corn, Lt. Derek Johnson. New Police Chief Corn announces promotions The Kirigs Mountain Rolie. Department recently saw sever- al promotions within its ranks. New Chief of Police is former Patrol Captain /Assistant Chief Houston Corn. Chief Corn be- gan his employment with the City of Kings Mouritain police department on January 15, 1973 as a’patrolman. He has served as crime prevention officer, pa- trol sergeant, sergeant in charge of the Special Response Team, detective sergeant, detective lieutenant over the criminal in- vestigation division, and inter- im chief. He was sworn in as Chief on May 9. Corn graduated from Enka High School in June 1970 and began working with the City of Kings Mountain gas depart- ment until he was drafted into the military in 1971. He served in the Viet Nam War. He is mar- ried to Cathy Corn and they have two daughters, Michelle and Christy, and one grandson, Daniel: Cornt'is an active meni’ ber of Second Baptist Church: «! ~~ Corn received his basic law enforcement certificate in January 1975, intermediate cer- tificate in April 1978, and ad- vanced certificate in April 1982. He is a member of the Cleveland County Child Abuse Response Team, United Family Services, Domestic Violence /Sexual Assault Task Force, N.C. Internal Affairs Investigators Association, N.C. Association of Chiefs of Police, N.C. Police Executive Association, N.C. Law Enforcement Officers Association, International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Cleveland County Fraternal Order of Police. Captain Melvin Proctor is the new Assistant Chief of Police. He was promoted on May 22. He has served the Kings Mountain police since 1987, when he began as a patrolman. He was made patrol sergeant in 1993, and transferred to the detective division in 1995 as a sergeant, and was promoted to ‘detective lieutenant in October 1997. Proctoris-a graduate of Titi Hoggard High Schoolin Wilmington. He is scheduled to graduate for Cleveland Community College in 2001 with an AA degree in Criminal Justice. He is a member of Christian Freedom Baptist Church and is married to Sgt. Lisa Proctor. He has two daughters, Krystal and Lauren. Lt. Derek Johnson was pro- moted to his present rank on May 20. He has been with the Kings Mountain Police Department since since 1988 when he began as a patrolman. He was promoted to sergeant in 1989 and moved into the detec- tive division in 1997. He worked for the department as a dispatcher in October 1983, and was sworn in as a patrolman in 1984. He later left the police de- partment for a time to work for Cleveland County EMS. During his EMS time, he remained as a reserve officer. - Johnson is a 1981 graduate of Kings Mountain High School, and received his basic law en- forcement certificate in August 1992, intermediate certificate in December 1994, and is sched- uled to receive his advanced certificate in summer of 2000. He is married to Michelle Johnson and they have a daughter, Courtney. He attends the Church of the Nazarene in Kings Mountain. Dellinger named to Campbell Dean’s list Campbell University School of Pharmacy recently an- nounced their Dean's List for the 2000 spring semester. David Larry Dellinger of Kings Mountain was one of the stu- dents to receive the honor. Travis Reynolds, 1409 Valley Haven Mobile Home Park #09, reported that someone broke in- to his residence and did $250 damage to a patio umbrella and $25 damage to a welcome rug. Crystal Greene, 611 Floyd St., reported that someone scratched her vehicle door, do- ing $500 damage. Food Lion, 1320 Shelby Rd., reported that someone broke in- to a drink machine and stole $60. WRECKS A vehicle driven by Misty Reinhardt of Kings Mountain backed into a vehicle operated by Donnie Burgess of Kings Mountain in the parking lot of Taco Bell on N.C. 161. Kareem Marshall, Grover, said hi§ vehicle had stalled on Groves St. and he was rolling it down the hill to try to start it when he struck a utility pole. Damage to the car was $1,200. A vehicle driven by Dan Burks Jr. of Kings Mountain struck a fire hydrant at the in- tersection of Battleground and Gold St. Damage to the vehicle was $4,000. Vehicles driven by Bruce Chase of Charlotte and Cynthia Davis of Kings Mountain struck on U.S. 74 at Watterson St. Damage to the Chase vehicle, owned by Seland Contractors of Charlotte, was $1,200. Damage to the Davis vehicle was $2,500. A vehicle driven by Alvin Garrett of Lowell backed into a parked vehicle owned by © Harold Etters of Kings Mountain in the parking lot of Loui’s Restaurant on E. King St. Damage to the Garrett van was $300, and damage to the Etters van was $500. Vehicles driven by Maurice Nichols and Elisa Smarr, both of Kings Mountain, struck on East Gold St. Damage to the Nichols vehicle, owned by Carl McGill of Shelby, was $1,000. Damage to the Smarr vehicle was $2,000.
