Gene White. WILLIAM GRIGG SHELBY- William Lee “Bill” Grigg, 54, 512 Gorman Street, died June 10, 2000 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Fred and Lilly Allen Grigg. He was also preceded in death by brothers Hal Grigg and Maynard Grigg. He was a com- puter operator with Doran Computer Center. He was a member of Putnam Memorial Baptist Church and Amvets. He was a U.S. Navy veteran from 1963-1967. He is survived by his wife S. Jean Smith Grigg of the home; daughter and son in law Christine and Tim Boyd of Vale, N.C.; daughter and son in law Kimberly and Toney Reeves of Shelby; brother Milland Grigg of Shelby; sisters Marjorie Boysworth of Pickens, S.C. and Joyce Mellon of Vale, N.C; grandsons John-Michael Maganess, Brandon Maganess, William Boyd. A native of Cherokee County; he was the husband of Hazel Reynolds Horn and the son of Robert Lee Horn of Macon, Georgia and the late Mary Willine Haulbrooks Horn Owensby. He was an electrician and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam conflict. - In addition to his wife and fa- ther, he is survived by his daughters Angela Horn and Monica Faye Horn both of Gaffney; brothers Floyd Owensby of Shelby, Bobby Wayne Owensby and Sandy Gene Owensby both of Gaffney; sister Alvenia O. JACKIE CLAYTON SHELBY- Jackie Charles Clayton, 66, died June 12, 2000 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Greenville County, S.C., he was the son of the late James Moody and Gladys Reid Clayton. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Allen and Jerry Clayton. He was a member of the Grover Church of God. He was a Mason in the Kings Mountain Lodge. He was re- tired from the Hertz-Celanese chemical plant. He was in- volved in the Nursing Home Ministry at his church. He is survived by his wife Zolia Buchanan Clayton of the home; son and daughter in law Arnold and Dorrie Clayton of Grover; daughters and sons in law Jackie Renee Burke of Kings Mountain, Angela and Dennis Fiore of Florida, Stella and Kenneth Bush of Kings Mountain; brothers Paul and Bobby Clayton of Blacksburg, Larry Clayton of Grier, S.C.; al- so nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A native of Cleveland County, He was the son of the late Roy F. and Lucille Auten Teddy, Sr. He was retired from O.E. Ford Co. as a salesman. He was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church as a Deacon, Elder and Treasurer, and was a former Eagle Scout. He was a WWII U.S. Army vet- eran of the European Theater, He is survived by his wife Margaret Caldwell Teddy of the home; son Michael E. A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Sandra Grigg Fitzgerald of the home and son of Ethel Pearson Fitzgerald and the late Vernon Fitzgerald. In addition to his fa- ther he was also preceded in death by a brother Barry Fitzgerald. He was affiliated with Warco Construction Co. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by sons James Kelly Fitzgerald of Gaffney; Jeffery Keith Fitzgerald, Joel Kenneth Fitzgerald and John Kerry Fitzgerald, all of Blacksburg; brothers James Fitzgerald and Edward Fitzgerald both of Gaffney; sister Peggy Scruggs of Gaffney; also four granddaugh- ters and one grandson. GRACE HAMRICK- SHELBY- Grace Rutledge Hamrick, for many years ac- tive as a journal- ist and civic par- ticipant in Shelby, died June 13, 2000 at her NY home, 308 Tremont Place. She was the wife of C. Rush Hamrick, Jr, Chairman of Kendall Drug Company from _ which he retired in 1986. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1941 with a de- gree in Journalism. She was elected first female president of the General Alumni Association (1976-77) and received the Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1983. She served two terms on the Board of Visitors, was a board member of Friends of the Library (Wilson and Davis), served two terms on the UNC Center for Public Television and later on the Public TV Foundation boards, and many years on local and “district committees of the John Motley Morehead Scholarship Foundation. As a journalist, Mrs. Hamrick was editor of “The Cleveland Times” when the male force was called to World War II (1942-46), and again from 1960- 65. She was a columnist for “The Shelby Star” during the 1980s. In 1991, her husband published in book form a ran- dom selection of her columns entitled “She’s My Amazing Grace!” which he gave as gifts and, after persuasion, offered for sale with the proceeds con- tributed to research for Parkinson’s disease, an ailment from which she suffered. She also co-au- thored the history of the First Baptist Church of Shelby, of which she was a member, and edited 50-year histories of the Shelby Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Shelby Junior Charity League, Shelby Woman's Club, and Cleveland Federal Savings and Loan Association. She was the first female awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by the Shelby Rotary Club, and was Shelby’s Woman of the Year in 1963. She was Cleveland County project chairman for - celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the English landing on Roanoke Island, chairing the committee to land- scape grounds at the Cleveland Historical Museum, of which she was a charter member. She aided in he design of the cubi- ~ cles in the Hall of Fame and wrote biographies of all 25 that have been named to the Hall. She served on the board of Cleveland Memorial Hospital, Gardner-Webb Board of Advisors, trustee of Cleveland Community College, was ap- pointed by Gov. Robert Scott to the Governor’s Advisory Committee, honoring her with a “Footprint in Time” at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh in “recognition and apprecia- tion of her outstanding contri- butions to the N.C. Museum of History, the Museum of History Associates and to Cleveland County.” She was twice president of Shelby Junior Charity League and twice chairman of the League's Debutante Ball. She was a member of Historic Shelby Foundation, the Literario Book Club, Triple Deck and Round Dozen Bridge Clubs.
