Ben Howell named Collegiate Scholar Ben Howell of Kings Mountain has accepted mem- bership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be hon- ored during a campus cere- mony this fall at North : Carolina State HOWELL University. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is a highly selected, na- tional, non-profit honors orga- nization. The USSA has established the All-American Collegiate ; Scholar Award Program to offer deserved recognition to superi- or students who excel in the academic disciplines. The All- American College Scholars must earn a 3.3, or higher, grade point average. Girl Scouts announce award winners Girl Scouts of the Pioneer Council recently honored sever- al outstanding women with the Juliette Award. The Juliette Award, named for the founder of Girl Scouting, Juliette Lo w, recognizes significant civic, vol- unteer, and service contribu- tions throughout the honorees community. An Overall Woman of Distinction was chosen from the Juliette recipients as a indi- vidual who personifies the im- age of leadership and commit- ment to community and service. Viet Nam exhibit at Arts Council In connection with Uptown Shelby Association’s “Freedom Fest,” the Cleveland County Arts Council will be hosting an exhibit entitled “Remembering Viet Nam”. The exhibit will feature mem- orabilia from the Viet Nam Era and will run July 3-13. The Arts Council is seeking photos, writ- ings, artwork, keepsakes, etc. for this important time in our nation’s history. Special Olympics end in Raleigh The 2000 Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games ended June 4 in Raleigh. Athletes from across the state competed in aquatics, athletics, gymnastics, powerlifting, soft- ball and volleyball. Gold, silver, and bronze medals were award- ed to the top three athletes in each competition. To ensure fair competition, the athletes were placed in divisions according to gender, age, and ability level.
