Randy Hartsoe and Chris Edwards won the third flight by two strokes over Shane Adams and Chad Adams. Hartsoe and Edwards shot 80-78--158, and the Adams’ shot 83-87--160. Closest to the pin winners were Bryan Jones and Tim Leach on #5, C. Wright and Kim Taylor on #8, Jerry Broadwell and Bob Jones on #12, and P. Tingen and Don Teague on #17. Jim Jolly won the long drive contest, and Curt Collins and Gerald Putnam won the putting contest. Back, coaches Buddy Rice, Denis Hayes, Terry Smith. 1 KM’s S-year-old all-stars second in state tourney Kings Mountain's 8-year-old Dixie Youth all-star team fin- ished second in last week's state tournament in Riegelwood. ‘It was theiinaugural state tournament for the AA divi- sion, which consists of coach pitch teams for ages 7-8. The tournament consisted of ~12-teams. Kings Mountain rep- resented District 3 after win- ning the recent district tourna- ment in Bessemer City. Kings Mountain's record in the state tourney was 3-2, with both losses coming to state champion Southpark of Charlotte. In the opening game, KM fought back from a seven-run deficit in the third inning to de- feat Kannapolis 21-16. The de- fense tightened up and held Kannapolis to two runs over the last four innings. Timothy Gaddy led the KM offense with 2-for-4 and four runs batted in. Ryan Doty and Cody Austin each went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. Defensively, Kings Mountain held Kannapolis to 16 batters over the last four innings. In the second round, Kings Mountain defeated Bessemer City 13-10. Kings Mountain led 13-3 going into the sixth inning. Bessemer City, which finished “second to KM:-in the district »-tournament, advanced to round two with a victory over Bunn. Kings Mountain scored four runs in the second inning, with + Gaddy'’s three-run home run the highlight. In the third inning, leadoff - Love always, Phyllis ne ia batter Stuart Smith singled to spark a five-run rally. In the fifth, Jake Allen and Zachary Hayes hit back-to-back triples and Kings Mountain scored four more runs to close out the victory. Gaddy led the offense with four RBIs, and Hayes and John Byron Gamble contributed three RBIs each. In the third round, Kings Mountain jumped to a 7-0 lead in the second inning but ended up losing to Southpark 19-10. Southpark scored 10 runs in the third. Gaddy led Kings Mountain with 3-for-3, and Bradley Lovelace and Cory Brooks each had two RBIs. In the semi-finals, Kings Mountain faced Southport, * which had eliminated Bessemer City 4-3. Kings Mountain erupt- ed for six runs in the first in- ning, led by a two-run triple from Rai Robinson. Robinson led the KM plate at- tack with 3-for-3 and two triples. Outfielder Blake Hollifield also contributed three RBIs. KM finished off Southport in the sixth inning with a double play led by Cody Austin. In the championship game with Southpark, Kings Mountain managed only five hits and lost 14-2. Stuart Smith led the plate attack with 2-for-2. Ethan Roper and Jake Allen scored KM’s only runs. “Our team played hard throughout the tournament, playing five games over three days, a tough schedule for eight-year-olds,” said coaches Denis Hayes, Terry Smith and Buddy Rice. “The caliber of teams playing in the tourna- ment, all of whom were all-star teams from various cities across North Carolina, proves that the boys are a special group of kids with a lot of talent. “With the caliber of oppo- nents and the grueling schedule of five game sin three days, the tournament proved to be physi- . cally and mentally exhausting for the youngsters. But the tour- nament provides this age group of players a target to aim for, Just as older Teagues Prine inza Vara Gadd led the KM hitting during the tourney with a .667 average (10-for-15), and also led the team with 12 runs batted in. Robinson hit .625 (5-for-8) and Smith hit .600 (9-for-15). Austin hit .571 (8-for-14) and Clay Kerns hit .500 (6-for-12). Other batting averages were Jake Allen .467, Cory Brooks 455, Ryan Doty .417, Zachary Hayes .400 and a team-leading nine runs scored, Ethan Roper .364, John Gamble .267, Blake Hollifield .214, and Bradley Lovelace .182. The team hit .440 (74-for-168), and scored 61 runs. Freddy Smith finishes ninth Kings Mountain's Freddy Smith finished 9th in the General Aluminum 100 Friday at Raceway 7 in Conneaut, OH. Chub Frank of Sugar Grove, PA passed Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN with eight laps to go to post his first career HAT victory. Frank won $20,000. Smith won $2,500. Smith finished 12th and won in General Aluminum 100 $1,450 in the 75-lap main event Saturday at Hagerstown, MD Speedway. Gary Shuhler of nearby Greencastle, PA won the $10,000 first prize. Smith held onto his fifth place position in the HAT point standings. He has 3,158 points. Steve Francis is the leader with 3,422, with Bloomquist and Wendell Wallace a close second with 3,402 each.
