Page 2A “OBITUARIES “MILDRED LEDFORD KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mildred Montgomery Ledford, 79, 312 Maner Road, died July 25, 2000 at Wendover Hospice, Shelby. A native of Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Effie McGinnis and wife of the late Boyd Montgomery and the late James Ledford. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, and she was retired from Minette Mills, Grover. --She is survived by her son, Robert Montgomery and wife, Wanda, of Kings Mountain; stepson, Rick Ledford and wife, Patricia, of Kings Mountain; daughters, Linda Clark and Aneita Champion, both of Shelby; stepdaughter, Terry Ledford of Kings Mountain; brother, Carl McGinnis of Raleigh; sisters, Ocie Hoyle and PatParker of Dallas; four grandchildren, Robin Carlton, Jimmy Sanders, Shannon Sanders, and Haley Montgomery; and seven great- grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. David Turner at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mountain Rest Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at Harris Funeral Home. A native of Cherokee County S.C., he was the son of the late Gill and Nannie Randall Norman. He was retired form Hickory Construction Co., Hickory. He was a member of Hardin Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII with the rank of Staff Sgt. of the 27th Infantry. He served in sev- eral campaigns including Central Pacific, Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, and Luzon. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal with one bronze star, Phillipine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, Asiatic. Pacific ; Theater, Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Helen Frye Norman; sons and daughter in law Larry and Lorene Norman of Mount Holly, Brent Norman of Dallas; daughters and son in law Nan and Michael Nicholson of Kings Mountain and, Jeff Withers of High Shoals; sister and brother in law Faye and Bud Ruppe of Gaffney, S.C.; nine grandchil- dren; three great grandchildren. The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hardin Baptist Church by the Revs. Fain Farmer and Dan Jones. Burial was in the church ceme- tery. A native of Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Arthur Lee Carpenter of Lincolnton. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force where he served six years, in- cluding active duty as a mili- tary. police officer for the 1611th Air Police Squadron at McGuire AFB in Trenton, NJ and Tullen AFB in Vienna, Austria. He was honorably discharged in 1954 with two Battle Stars on Korean SV Medal and a National Defense Medal. He later graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College and worked as a CPA for Mauney Hosiery Mills, Inc. in Kings Mountain for 30 years. He also served at Mauney Hosiery as Treasurer and Controller, and was a member of the Board of Directors following his retire- ment in 1995. He was founder and part owner of C&K Gun Sales and Pawn in Lincolnton. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mrs. Margie Carpenter of Lincolnton; sons, Todd Carpenter and daughter-in-law Ginger Duckworth Carpenter of Lincolnton, and Greg Carpenter and daughter-in-law Melody Roberts Carpenter of Denver; daughter, Mrs. Jill Carpenter Cooper and son-in-law Casey Cooper of Cherokee; mother, Mrs. Katherine Bumgardner Carpenter of Lincolnton; sister, Mrs. Mary Carpenter Ramseur and brother-in-law Bob Ramseur of Lincolnton; brother, Kenneth Carpenter and sister- in-law Shirley Campbell Carpenter of Dunwoody, GA; and seven grandchildren. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Jett Thomas and Ada Seagraves Burroughs. She was a member of First Baptist Church since 1946, where she served as Director of the WMU and a member of the Nominating Committee. She was active in the Senior Group Young at Heart. She was a retired nurse at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She also assisted her hus- band at Keeter’s Department Store, which operated in Kings, Mountain from 1926-1963. She was a member of the Study Club for more than 60 years. She was a charter member of the Kings Mountain Garden Club, and a member of the . Woman's Club, Kings Mountain Country Club, several bridge | clubs, and served as a pink lady and receptionist at Kings Mountain Hospital. As a member of First Baptist Church, she was Choir Director and played for worship, wed- dings, and funerals for many years. She taught Intermediate Girls in Sunday School, led Girls Auxiliary, was a Circle Leader and WMU President. * She was instrumental in orga- nizing the church library and. was its first librarian. As first President of the WMU at Kings Mountain Baptist Church, she attended many activities at Ridgecrest, the Baptist assembly grounds. She also served the WMU in the Associational lev- el, as Associate Superintendent, organizing the new groups in the churches while maintaining her interest in the library. She was the senior member of Kings Mountain Baptist Church. She is survived by her daugh- ters, Eoline K. Hord of Kings Mountain and Jo Keeter Madison and husband Randolph, Jr., of Petersburg, Va.; also seven grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Fries Lumber Company in Huron and the Coshocton Lumber Company. He and his wife owned and operated the Americana Shop and were in the kitchen cabinet business in Coshocton County for several years. In 1984, he retired from River View School District, where he taught i in the high school for 15 yéars. He was an avid antique collector and woodworker. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Post and the Coshocton Elks Lodge 376.
