“Page 2B The Kings Mountain Herald KMLT wants to get acquainted every Thursday night in August Kings Mountain Little Theatre is holding “Get Acquainted With Us Thursdays” in August. Each Thursday in the month, anyone interested in joining the group of learning about the back stage features of the com- munity theater are invited to at- tend. Each evening will begin with a snack supper at 6 p.m. at the Kings Mountain Woman's Club, 108 Mountain Street. August 3, 10 and 24 will be devoted to organizing and cata- loguing of costumes, set items, and props. August 17 and 31 will be spe- cial evenings of Reader's Theater. BM Audition dates for the KMLT production of “Nuncrackers” are Sunday, August 13 and Monday, August 14 at 7 p.m. Jim Champion will direct the sequel to “Nunsense,” with several of his original cast members returning to reprise their roles. The “Nunsense” Christmas Musical “Nuncrackers,” takes place in real time in the base- ment of Mount St. Helen's - Convent. It is the first TV spe- cial being taped in the Cable Access TV Studio built by Reverend Mother with a part of the prize money won earlier by Sister Mary Paul (aka Amnesia). The cast (returning players in parenthesis) consists of Reverend Mother Regina (Susan Champion), Sister Mary SUBRINA JONES Subrina Jones celebrates birthday Subrina Nellie Louise Jones, daughter of David and Sherry Jones of Kings Mountain, was 13 years old on July 10. She and her guests attended a movie at Moovies at Franklin Square, and then had a party at CiCi's Pizza. Afterward, they were served birthday cake and Subrina opened her presents. Subrina is the granddaughter of Arnold Short of Kings Mountain and the late Louise Ford Short, and Nellie Jones of Shelby and the late Harris C. He celebrated July 23 with a Winnie the Pooh party. Family members and guests were served hot dogs, cake, ice cream and other refreshments. Guests included his big brother, Riley, uncle Ronnie Arant of Charlotte, special friend Lori Davis of Charlotte, grandparents Buddy and Evie Arant of Kings Mountain and David and Jan Sloop of Weddington, and his great- grandfather, Jack Penick of Charlotte. Sloop celebrates birthday Riley Michael Sloop, son of Mike and Christi Sloop of Charlotte, was five years old July 24. Guests included Chloe Moore, Katy Colvin, Erin Tillman, Bayleigh and Kylee Henneman, Austin and, Thompson Cunningham, and Christopher and Victoria Phipps, all of Charlotte. Riley has a brother, Caleb, who is one year old. He is the grandson of Buddy and Evie Arant of Kings Mountain and David and Jan Sloop of Weddington. His great- grandparents are Jack and Eleanor Penick of Charlotte and Anne Arant of Chester, SC. Local airmen are on duty in Mediterranean Navy Airman Philip C. Smith, son of Sandra and George C. Smith of Kings Mountain, and Navy Airman Bridgette M. Barker, daughter of Cathryn F. Barker of ' Bessemer City, recently depart- ed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, home ported in Norfolk, VA. They are among more than 10,000 Atlantic Fleet Sailors and Marines deploying aboard the ships of the USS George Washington Carrier Battle Group and USS Saipan Amphibious Ready Group. The groups are comprised of 11 sur- face combatants, two sub- marines, nine aircraft squadrons and one Marine Expeditionary Unit. During the deployment, Smith’s and Barker's ship will defend U.S. policy and support international interests in the Middle East and Europe. Prior to deploying, the groups participated in a 17-day Atlantic Joint Task Force Exercise. This exercise was de- signed to prepare naval forces for contingencies they may en- counter during the deployment. Sailors trained in amphibious, undersea and surface warfare operations, and maritime inter- ception. Carriers like USS George Washington are deployed around the world to maintain U.S. presence and provide rapid “ response in times of crisis. Frederick Hambright Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, recently helped North Carolina win third place in the World War II Memorial’ Challenge, an effort to collect the most donations for honorees in the DAR’s Book of Remembrance. Chairman of the WWII Memorial Challenge for the Southeast District, won first place in the nation for sending in the most honorees for the book - 2,272. Monroe won first place for the August 3, 2000 CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Athlene Hicks, left, and Betty Masters of Colonel Frederick Hambright Chapter, DAR, were recognized nationally for their efforts to raise donations for the DAR’s Book of Remembrance. Hicks is Regent of the local chapter, and Masters is NC State Program Chairman. Hicks and Masters recognized for raising funds for DAR project ‘chapter reporting the largest number of donations - 221. Alexander Martin Chapter in High Point was second with the most donors - 83. North Carolina sent in $27, 190, and was topped only by the much-larger states of California and Texas. ‘Of the 22 DAR members across'the country who had 20 or more donations, two were from Kings Mountain - Athlene Hicks and Betty Masters.
