August 10, 2000 ENGAGEMENT HEATHER RAEANN PATTERSON WILLIAM THOMAS PAYNE Patterson-Payne Mr. and Mrs. Randy C. Patterson of Kings Mountain announce the engagement of their daughter, Heather Raeann Patterson, to William Thomas Payne of Grover. The bride-elect is a 1995 graduate of Kings Mountain High School and attended Gaston College and Appalachian State University. She is'employed as manager of Popalops Candy Shop in Gastonia. The groom-elect is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Payne of Grover. He is a 1991 graduate of Kings Mountain High School and a 1996 grad- uate of Western Carolina University. He is em- ployed as store manager of Gateway Country, Inc. in Hickory. The date of their wedding has been set for September 9, 2000. When holidays or other reasons make it necessary for the paper to publish a day: early, the deadline is Friday at 12 noon. Items received after that time will run in other areas of the paper if time and space permit. If not, they will be held until the following week if they are still timely. There is no charge for articles. However, there is a $5 preparation fee for birthday pic- tures and a $10 preparation fee for wedding, anniversary and engagement pictures. She enjoyed barbecue with all the trimmings and birthday cake with her family at White Oak Manor. Mabel’s children are, left to right, Peggy Flowers, Jerry Ross and Nell Randall. She has 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Broad River Greenway third anniversary events The Broad River Greenway near Boiling Springs will celebrate its third anniversary with several August and September activities. Saturday, August 12 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m, Broad River Adventures on Honey Haven Farm Road will feature a tubing trip down the river. No reservations are necessary. Cost for tube and shuttle is $5 per person. Sunday, August 20 at 2 p.m., folks who want to learn many fascinating facts about kudzu can gather at the restored Pfifer cabin at the Greenway to hear a lecture “Kudzu Kollege” by Suzanne Simmons of the Schiele Museum. The following Sunday, August 27,at 2 p.m. “Animals Along the Broad” will be presented by Wildlife Officer Ken Cook-at the cabin. September 10, visitors are invited to “Hike the Greenway'’s Trails” with the Broad River Council. Hikers should meet in the parking lot before 2 p.m.. Volunteers will gather Saturday, September 16 at the Greenway for a “Clean Sweep” trash pick- up. Time is 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Greenway’s big Summer Finale will be held Sunday, September 17 starting at 2 p.m. In addition to the annual Rubber Ducky Regatta on the river, other activities will include birthday cake and ice cream at the cabin, storytelling, make and take crafts, music along the trails, and Quigley the Clown.
