Hayes, the retired KM Police Chief, filed the suits recently, claiming that Maney forced him to resign his job when he chose to run for City Commissioner in 1997. Hayes claims Maney in- formed him that he would be fired for violation of the City’s Personnel Policy if he filed for election. Hayes could not be reached for comment, but issued a state- ment Friday through his attor- ney, Rob Deaton of Shelby. In it, Hayes said he had in- structed Deaton to notify the at- torney for the insurance compa- ny handling his claim against KM TRIATHLON the city that he would take a “voluntary dismissal” of the suit “without prejudice.” That means, Deaton said, that Hayes has a year to re-file the suit. Hayes indicated he will work with City Council to have the Personnel Policy changed. “I believe the policy should allow city employees to file for elective office, and campaign for that office on their own per- sonal time,” Hayes said. I was never offered the opportunity to take a leave of absence, or was al- lowed to run without the threat of termination. “I continue to believe in the absolute right of city employees to exercise their freedom of See Hayes, 3A Board member wants notification of future hirings By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Kings Mountain School Board member Melony Bolin requested at Monday night's meeting that future hirings of persons to positions shared fi- nancially with other organiza- tions be brought to the Board before approval. During an otherwise brief, routine meeting at Central School, Bolin questioned Asst. Supt. for Personnel Ronnie Wilson on the recent Cleveland County Health Department hir- ing of a nurse for Kings Mountain Middle School. Wilson said a nurse had been hired for the position vacated when Dianna Thomas accepted the position as the system-wide nurse, and that the new em- ployee was currently undergo- ing training. : Wilson explained after the meeting that the arrangement with the Health Department for a nurse at Kings Mountain High School began almost 10 years ago and was originally to- tally funded by the Health Department. The School Board voted in June 1991 to accept the Health Department’s proposal to place a nurse at KMHS. In 1994 the contract was ex- tended to place a nurse at the Middle School and the School System agreed to provide Day of $12,000 of the cost. The System has allocated $32,792 (less than 50% of the total cost) in the 2000-01 budget to help pay for both positions. Throughout the arrangement, the Health Department has con- tinued to be in charge of hiring the nurses for those schools. The School System provides full funding for its system-wide nurse, which it hires itself. Wilson also noted that Kings Mountain Police Department had recently assigned a new School Resource Officer at Kings Mountain High School and was in the process of inter- viewing for a SRO for Kings Mountain Middle School. The school system and KMPD were recently awarded a three-year, $97,864 grant which covers three-fourths of the cost for an officer for the middle school. After the third year, the School System and City of Kings Mountain will each pay half the cost of the position. ~The high school SRO position was originally funded in 1995 by a grant with a 25% match from the System, Wilson said. Currently, KMDS provides $29,915 for the position. Bolin said she didn’t disagree with the people hired for those positions, but she wants to be advised before they assume their responsibilities.
