Page 2A The Kings Mountain Herald ~ OBITUARIES Little Billy Bridges now bundle of ay | BY ALAN HODGE Staff Writer Just like the Ever Ready rab- bit, nine-year-old Billy Bridges of Shelby just keeps on going and going. Born with a variety of ailments that would have stopped lesser men in their tracks, Billy has not only overcome the odds against him, he’s left many of them in the dust. Currently a third grader at Number Three Township Elementary School, Billy fits in nicely despite frequent trips to doctors. He resides with his grandparents Helen and Butch Barnette whom he calls “mom” and “dad.” “The kids accept Billy as he is,” says Helen Barnette. “Even though he’s in special classes and takes physical therapy, he made the Honor Roll.” Because he was unable to get out and about for many years, Billy is wide open now that he feels better. The family of Gregory Brent McDonald would like to sincerely thank Harris Funeral Home for their outstanding service to us during the loss of our father. They were wonderfully caring and thoughtful of us and our needs. A special thank you goes out to “Eric Wright” for his concern and care to us. You couldn't ask for people to be anymore caring than they were. Thanks Harris! The McDonald Family Three years ago, Ruby Moss Alexander was given six months to live. In spite of her continual struggle with cancer, Ruby’s recent years were marked more by activity than by - sickness, more by giving encouragement than by requiring it, more by laughter than by tears, more by faith than by hopelessness, and more by fun with family than by anger at the physical enemy within. The |" i weakness of her body allowed he strength of ler spirit i ~ to become every moreevident.! # We are thankful to our Lord for His grace to us in extending her life for our benefit, and for allowing us the opportunity to minister to her in her final days on earth. BILLY BRIDGES “I love basketball and play with my friends every chance I get,” Billy said. According to Barnette, Billy is “full of energy and wants to play constantly.” “Because he burns up so many calories, we have to try and slow him down a little,” she said. Billy’s special medical needs mean that he still only weighs about 50 pounds now. In order to even maintain that weight, he has to consume large quanti- ties of high calorie foods such as creamed potatoes and cheese. After he gets out of school at 1 p.m. and comes home, Billy needs to drink a large glass of half and half milk to boost his caloric intake. Another aspect of Billy's at- tending public school is the constant need to shield him from certain contagious dis- eases. 2 NOGESV TE Since her departure for Heaven, we have beén so blessed by those in the community who have reached out to us in support and encouragement. The seat is equipped with extra belts that give enhanced security. These precautions are just tri- fling things in the way of Billy and his desire to excel. According to his teachers, his thirst for knowledge is “like a sponge.” Trips to the library for more and more books are also some of Billy's favorite outings. He visits the library at least once a week and often more. Reading is also his favorite sub- ject in school. “My favorite books are the ‘Goosebumps’ and ‘Babysitters Club’ mysteries,” Billy says. With so much behind him, Billy is confident about the fu- ture. He says he still wants to be a doctor. Barnette says she’ thinks Billy has a special gift of empathy with sick folks. Until the day he hangs out his shin- gle, Billy is focusing on the school year right now. “I'm doing my homework and looking forward to Christmas,” he says.
