TO AS AR A EER ES SPORTS Patriots win Division title Kings Mountain Middle School's Patriots won the Tri- County Conference Division I title for the second year in a row Wednesday with a 20-16 victory over Burns. The win gave David Heffner’s eleven a final record of 5-0 in the Division and 5-2 overall. Their losses were to Shelby and Crest. The Patriots were 6-1 last year, losing only to Crest. “Our defense had its best game of the season, and our of- fense continued its good play,” Heffner said. “I would like to thank all the players and coach- es for their hard work and dedi- cation.” Kings Mountain trailed 16-14 at halftime, but held Burns on a fourth down play to set up the winning touchdown in the third period. Dennis Moore scored on a 25-yard pass from Brandon McClain. McClain had hit Josh Melton on a 53-yard touchdown pass, and Wesley Dixon ran the two- point conversion to give the Patriots an 8-0 lead in the first quarter. But Burns came back to tie the game at 8-all. In the second quarter, the Burns defense held the Patriots with a goal line stand at the two yard line. Several plays later, Brad Moffitt recovered a Burns fumble and Dennis Moore scored on a 12-yard pass from McClain to put the Patriots on top 14-8. But Burns came back to score on a 66-yard run late in the sec- ond period, and added the two- point conversion for a 16-14 ad- vantage. Kings Mountain's defense came up with two big stands in the second half to preserve the win. The Patriots held Burns on fourth down to end the third quarter, and after a KM fumble the Patriots held the Bulldogs again and then the offense ran the clock out. The Patriots defeated Burns for the Tri-County Conference Division I title, KM’s second straight. Hilltoppers crush KM 21-7 By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Kings Mountain's Mountaineers turned the ball over five times in the first half Friday night at R-S Central, and the Hilltoppers took advantage of two of them to post a 21-7 victory in the Southwestern 3A Conference football game. The loss left the Mountaineers, R-S Central, North Gaston and East Rutherford tied for last place with 1-2 conference records. The Hilltoppers drove less than 45 yards for each of their three touchdowns to grab a 21-0 lead. Even though the Mountaineers didn’t turn the ball over in the second half, they didn’t have any success moving it either. David Farquharson’s charges didn’t register their first first down of the second half until the final two minutes, when they drove 99 yards for their only score of the night.
