Added to the 82 workers who were laid off in October, the plant has seen 161 employees head out the gates. According to plant manager Larry Miller, the layoffs became necessary when orders dropped due to a fluctuation in the busi- ness cycle brought on by higher fuel prices, interest rates, and truck inventories. “We have a good team and we have invested a lot in train- ing them,” Miller said. “Based on our business plan we hope to have the workers back by late spring or early summer.” Those laid off are due to re- ceive holiday pay and benefits through the end of January. In addition, they will get help in signing up for unemployment and Eaton is working with out- placement services to find them other work. “Business is slow right now,” said Miller. “It has been a very difficult task to determine the market. Any upkick in business could see the workers called back sooner.” The Kings Mountain Eaton plant is located on U.S. 29/74 and normally employs 440 workers. Other major corpora- tions nearby include Mayflower Vehicle Systems and UMG. Freightliner workers approve new contract Freightliner LLC and the United Auto Workers (UAW) announced ratification of a new three-year labor agreement af- fecting approximately 2,350 em- ployees at Freightliner’s Mount Holly Truck Manufacturing plant. The new contract calls for three annual wage increases. The top wage for the majority of employees in the truck as- sembler classification will be in- creased to $21 per hour effective December 18. This is equivalent to the top pay in all of the com- pany’s other U.S. truck manu- facturing plants. At issue were bonuses paid and salary increases granted to all other facilities during the past year. Included in the agree- ment are a one time $2,000 retroactive bonus and a $500 partial wage differential pay- ment to bring the Mount Holly plant to parity with the compa- ny’s other non-UAW- represent- ed plants. In addition, the com- pany agreed to provide equity to Mount Holly in future recog- nition bonuses [planned for or otherwise granted to its em- ployees. Also agreed to were some administrative changes to the current UAW agreement. Bloodmobile visit at Grace Methodist The Cleveland County Bloodmobile will be at Grace United Methodist Church December 21 from 1:30-6 p.m. This is the annual chili and T- shirt visit. Cleveland County Red Cross Director Rick Dancy said the gift of blood is always impor- tant, especially during the holi- day season when thousands of patients in area hospitals will need blood. “More than 1,500 people need blood in our region each day,” says Dr. Jerry Squires, executive director of the Carolinas Blood Region of the American Red Cross, which serves 110 hospi- tals in the Carolinas, Georgia and Tennessee. “The need for blood doesn’t go away during the holidays. A single blood do- nation a mere hour of some- one’s time, can save the lives of at least three people. I can’t think of a better way to cele- brate the season.” Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in general good health. ] Got A Car For Sale??
