A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of | the late William S. and Margaret Hannon : Sperling. He - was also pre- ceded in death by his brothers, Jay Randolph Sperling and B. Edwin Sperling; and his sister, Inez Childers Swanson. He was a member of East Baptist Church, Charlotte. He was a retired construction con- tractor and was a veteran of the U.S. Army with service during the Korean War. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and was instrumental with her husband in beginning; St. Barnabus Episcopal Church. She was a member of the : Greensboro Euterpe and its Music Teachers Group. She was active in the Historical Book Club of North Carolina. She was a graduate of the New England Conservatory. Prior to her marriage she taught public school music in the Raeford and Durham City Schools. After her marriage and moye to Greensboro she began a long career‘of teaching pian® and‘elocution. Her dedication to preserving her family’s land surrounding the pinnacle of Kings Mountain contributed to the protection of the area as a North Carolina state park two weeks ago.
