That's the word from the N.C. Forest Service. . According to John Hunt with the Forest Service, 16 wildland fires have been touched off in North Caroline since the begin- ning of the new year. Normally, the figure is two or three fires by Groundhog Day. Fire season in our area usual- ly starts in mid-February. In Cleveland County itself, fire marshall Beau Lovelace says that there has been an oc- casional brush fire, but nothing large. “We haven't had a rash of fires or anything like that,” said Lovelace. Bill Ware with the KMFD cautioned folks to be careful about what they toss out of their cars. “A cigarette thrown on the side of the road can start a grass fire very quickly,” said Ware. According to Hunt and Ware, there are several fire safety rules to keep in mind during the cur- rent dry spell. One is to have a garden hose nearby and charged with water ready to keep the fire under control. If - you burn brush, stay with the fire the entire time. The person doing the burning is responsi- ble for not only the cost of con- trolling any wildfire that might occur, but also for any damages the fire may have caused. Remember, all trash burning is illegal. All household garbage should be taken to the county landfill. According to Ware, no ban on burning has been put into ef- fect. However, if it doesn’t rain soon, that could change. “The Forest Service monitors humidity and moisture levels every day,” said Ware. “If they feel like things are critical, they can ban burning.” Dr. Horton interim at KM Baptist Church Kings Mountain Baptist Church has called Dr. Charles Horton as full-time Interim Pastor.
