Washington St., Shelby 487-4521 Princess The Magnolia Garden Club met at the home of Sandra . Murphrey on March 26. Following snacks, Beth Baker introduced Nancy McGill who presented the program “Beauty in Flight” about attracting but- terflies to the garden. McGill mentioned that she had only seen two or three so far this spring. Butterflies espe- cially like to fly in warm tem- peratures from 86 to 104 de- grees Fahrenheit. Butterflies seem to be flying aimlessly from place to place, especially in springtime. However, their flight is not aim- less. Females are looking for host plants and places to de- posit their eggs. Males are look- ing for mates. The butterfly caterpillar needs host plants to nibble. These holes do not harm the plant itself. McGill explained the stages of a butterfly’s growth. The but- terfly eats the shell of its egg when it hatches. It becomes a chrysalis for seven to 14 days or longer depending upon the type of butterfly it is. RE RNR A butterfly lays a lot of eggs but few survive. Out of 100 eggs laid from one butterfly, on- ly two or three will live to adulthood. Birds eat butterfly eggs as well as the adults. They also nip butterfly wings. The Monarch butterfly gives off a disagreeable odor which is used as a form of defense. Butterflies ingest food from a liquid source, usually nectar that comes from flowers. Gardeners need to plant but- terfly gardens to entice butter- flies. Butterflies like mud pud- dles and damp places, sun, a rock to sunbathe, and protec- tion from the wind. They are es- pecially susceptible to pesti- cides. Butterflies have the ability to distinguish colors. Their fa- vorites are purple, pink, white, and yellow. They also like this- tle, parsley, inpatients, sedum, cornflower, clover, daisies, lan- tana, phlox, lilacs, butterfly bush, yarrow, verbena, and can- dytuft. Butterflies do not use butterfly houses. After the program, Phifer brought the business meeting to order. Murphrey and Geneva Caveny announced Magnolia Garden Club officers for next year. These include: President, Sandra Murphrey; Vice President, Edie Bridges; Secretary, Maxine Bennett; Treasurer, Dorine Ballard. Murphrey also discussed beautification needs in down- town Kings Mountain. The club approved planting and caring for one of the downtown gar- den spots that are available. The Gastonia Barbecue and Tour of Gardens was an- nounced as well as the May 12th Kings Mountain Woman's Club barbecue, Foodline Fundraising Vouchers for May 7 and 9, and Swat a Litterbug postcards. Esther Muench and Bess Phifer made a springtime ar- rangement using the theme, “In a Tall Container.” Each member present brought a “bulb” specimen from her yard. Food items were collected for the Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry.
