ANTHONY NATIONS Nations to g0 to Australia as student ambassador BY BEN LEDBETTER Staff Writer When Anthony Nations comes back from summer vaca- tion, he will have one of the most interesting stories to tell. He will be going to Australia as part of the People to People Student Ambassador Program. Nations, a sixth grader at Kings Mountain Middle School, will be a part of a group of stu- dents which will go to Australia June 10, and will stay 16 days. Robert Bolin of the Kings Mountain Optimist Club said the club is sponsoring Nations. “The main purpose of this is supporting Anthony to go,” Bolin said. Bolin said the approximate $4,000 expense has to be raised by the student or his family. “It’s a little difficult for par- ents to raise the $4,000,” he said. Bolin said the Optimist Club has started raising money for Anthony's trip. Having fun is not the only thing Nations said he wanted to do with his time down under. “We have to represent our country,” Nations said. “Because Australia has got a bad impression of us.” To be selected a student had to have a certain iscore from the average of the'End of Grade" tests: rae » ritlsard The students then went be- fore a committee and answered questions, and from there the group was selected. Nations also said he has had to write reports of what hap- pened in the meetings, and will have to turn in one describing the experience from being se- lected to coming home. To help in getting better aquainted with the country he had to look at a blank map of Australia and fill in where each territory was. “It’s very exciting,” Anthony said about going to Australia. “That’s one of the places I've carat aoa wanted to go.” One of the places Nations wants to see down under is the Great Barrier Reef. “I've seen it on television, and I've seen this underwater stuff, ‘and that’s made me even more excited about going.” For more information call Robert Bolin at 704-739-9612.
