Ethel McGinnis gave a report on the life of Harriett Tubberman. The book “Hidden in Plain View, A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad,” written by Jacqueline Tobin and Raymond Dobard, was told to the authors by Ozella Williams. The book depicts the hard- ship of slavery, and the wanting and searching for freedom of Harriett Tubberman. Throughout the story, the read- ers are told how hundreds of slaves were taken to the north. Quilts were used for and by the slaves as a guide to safety with the names of the quilts to tell the slaves’ messages. It is significant that Mrs. McGinnis told of the quilts be- cause of her expertise with quilting. She brought with her samples of those used in the story. These patterns were shown to members of the book club: monkey wrench, carpen- ter’s wheel, crossroads, log cab- in, shoofly, cathedral, bow tie, double wedding ring, drunk- ards path, and stars. It was in- teresting to note how each of these named patterns would lead the slaves to safety. Mrs. McGinnis noted that Harriett Tubberman died at the age of 93 in 1913, the year that she was born. In addition to helping slaves to freedom, she was noted for her fight for women voting, and for estab- lishing a place for elderly black to be able to go. The Thursday Afternoon Book Club will not meet again until September 27. Barbara Bridges will serve as hostess and Jeannie Moore will have the program.
