June 7, 2001 Freddy Smith second Thursday in Bristol Kings Mountain's Freddy Smith finished second to Scott Bloomquist in the 30-lap Battle of Bristol Thursday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. Bloomquist led only the last 20 feet of the main event spon- sored by the United Dirt Track Racing Association. The defending and four-time UDTRA champion pulled alongside Smith in turn four, and won the race by less than half a car length. The move earned Bloomquist $10,000. Smith pocketed $6,000. KM Dodgers win in Youth League The Kings Mountain Dodgers won two more games in youth baseball action last week. The Dodgers were led defen- sively by Ethan Stone, Bethany Bridges, Calan Sherrin, Arron Lopez, and Lexy Brafford. Shrine golf tourney June 16 at KMCC The White Plains Shrine Club will host its annual golf tourna- ment Saturday, June 16 at 7:30 a.m. at Kings Mountain Country Club. It is a captain's choice format. Entry fee is $40 and the field is limited to the first 20 teams. Rain date is June 23. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place as well as most accurate drive, closest to the pin on the par 3 holes, and longest putt. The Kings Mountain Herald ‘86 Lady Cobras second in tourney The ‘86 Lady Cobras Challenger soccer team con- cluded their spring season last week with a second place finish in the Avalanche Classic Tournament in Boone. Last summer the team trav- eled to Aiken, SC for a presea- son tournament and won the championship. They lost but one game in the fall regular sea- son and played out of Charlotte before participating in the High Point Tournament in February. They made it to the champi- onship game before losing in overtime. This spring, they went unde- feated and won the Charlotte League Championship with a record of 13-1-1. Last weekend, they again played in the cham- pionship match and lost in penalty kicks after playing to a 2-2 regulation tie and 3-3 over- time tie. Ashton Teague played in goal for the Cobras and turned away three penalty kicks with fantas- tic diving saves. Blair Heffner led all scorers in the tourna- ment with eight goals in four games. The Cobras team is composed of players from all Cleveland County middle schools and a player from RS Central Middle School.
