Pictured are Richard Short, Leah Scruggs, Savannah Jones and Brandon Watts Ready, Set, Grow program gives pre-kindergarten students boost By BEN LEDBETTER Staff Writer Helping preschool students in the summer pre- pare for kindergarten will help them during the later stages of their education. That is reasoning behind Ready, Set, Grow! oo = which Kings Mountain District Schools started to + target students that scored low on the Brigance Achievement Test. ~/And according to Bethware Elementary School : Kindergarten Teacher Brenda Wright, the five year old program has done that. The test score is what is used to determine eli- gibility. Wright said the average gain for students on the achievement test has been 20 points. Students in the program participate in a three - four week session during the summer, with class Gin being limited to 20 students. Wright said Page Ozmore and herself have Boer teaching the program for approximately _fouryears. < “I think it is the best program we have for pre kindergartners, ” Wright said. The program is also being done at East Elementary and Grover Elementary Schools. A parent center at Central School is also used to work with the students. Ready, Set, Grow! has students studying vari- ous concepts such as skills, colors, goals, numbers and self. Wright said the pre-kindergarten summer ses- sion helps the new students grow emotionally, physically and mentally. The program is funded through the Partnership for Children in Shelby which is part of the Head Start program. With a shortfall projected in the state’s budget over the next two years, Lynda Stewart, Kings Mountain Schools Elementary Curriculum ‘Specialist, said she hopes the program can still be funded. “We hope we can get funding for it next year, but it looks doubtful,” Stewart said. Stewart said the program is also used in the Cleveland County and Shelby City School Districts. =: With kindergarten being more structured, Wright said the program prepares them for that. “Because of kindergarten being more struc- tured, that’s why we started it - to get them ready,” Wright said. “I think it is the best program we have for pre kindergartners.” BE A FRIEND Kings Mountain The Same Concerned Care in a New Convenient Location History and Physical Examination including Pap smears, breast and pelvic exams Contraceptive Counseling Screening and Treatment of infections, menstrual irregularities, pelvic pain and PMS Perimenopausal and Postmenopausal Consultation Preconception and Maternity Care achieving optimal health, minimizing risks, ultrasounds and epidural anesthesia Referrals to Specialists If Required 704-487-5268 821 East Kings St., Kings Mountain, NC 28086 Hours: Mon. - Thurs. 9 am. - 5 pm.
