August 22 & 23, 2001 The New Season Directions to schools in Southwestern Foothills St. Stephens Southwestern Foothills 2001 football schedules Ll is looking to future By GARY STEWART St Stephens probably won't be a contender for the champi- onship in the new Southwestern Foothills 3A Conference just yet, but second- year coach John Jarman is building a program that he hopes to someday see on the same level with the perennial powers like Crest, Hickory, Kings Mountain and Burns. The Indians went 3-7 last year, and even though they're an improved ball club it will be tough improving on that record because of the stiff competition they'll face. “Going into this new confer- ence is going to be tougher than heck,” says Jarman. “You're go- ing to have to be ready to play every week. But we feel pretty good that we'll be able to com- pete.” St. Stephens lost some good seniors off last year’s team, but the Indians also return some good ones, including All- Conference offensive and de- fensive tackle Matt White, and All-Conference defensive back. Ian Justice. Both are ranked among the top prospects in the State at their position. In all, Jarman has 12 return- ing seniors, including six that have been starting since their sophomore year. “We're looking for them - most of them offensive linemen - to be the strength of our team,” says Jarman. That veteran line will have a talented running back to block for. Thomas Gordon, a 180- pound senior, was the team’s leading rusher last year and made All-Conference. : St. Stephens operates from a spread bone offense, similar to the one The Air Force Academy runs, and they'll be in a 4-3 on defense.
