Page 2A STEGER RAR ~ OBITUARIES JUSTIN BRASWELL KINGS MOUNTAIN - Justin Wade Braswell, 19, 105 Herman Court, died September 2, 2001 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Shelby. He was a native of Mecklenburg County. He was preceded in death by his grand- father, Herman Morrison. He attended North Shelby School and was a member of ‘Kings Mountain Lighthouse Pentecostal Church. He partici- pated in the Special Olympics and loved music and art. He is survived by his mother, Donna “Sissy” Gay Morrison and her companion, Jim Walker, of Kings Mountain; maternal grandmother, Virginia Morrison of Kings Mountain; maternal grandmother, Toshi Morrison of Polkville; and uncles, Randy Morrison and wife Elaine, and Scott Morrison and his compan- ion, Dorothy Bagwell. . FRANCES BARRETT KINGS MOUNTAIN - Frances Bledsoe Barrett, 68, 4848 Barrett Road, died September 1, 2001 at White Oak Manor. A native of Scott County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Harrison Bledsoe and Rebecca Gilbreath Bledsoe. She was a member of David Baptist Church and was retired from the nursing profession. She is survived by her hus- band, Odell Barrett of Kings Mountain; brother, Carl Bledsoe of Kings Mountain; sister, Marie Delgado of Winder, GA; step- son, Wendell Barrett of Kings Mountain; and grandchildren, Lisa Millwood, Kathy Flowers, Patti Haynes, and Tamara Phillips; and eight great-grand- children. The funeral was-conducted by the Revs. jody Griffin and Barry Philbeck at 11 a.m. Monday at David Baptist Church. Interment was in New Camp Creek Baptist Church cemetery. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Hosea Lee Bobbitt and Mary Parrish Bobbitt and wife of the late Elizie M. Bridges. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Clarence Bobbitt and Ernest Bobbitt, and sisters, Josie Barnette, Rena Gault and Carrie Hord. She was a textile worker and she worked in food service at Kings Mountain Hospital and White Oak Manor. She is survived by her son, Bobby R. Bridges and wife Norma of Kings Mountain; daughters, Margaret B. Rayfield and husband Jack of Kings Mountain, Betty B. Conner and husband Don of Kings Mountain, and Carol B. Gantt of Houston, TX; sisters, Louise King of Kings Mountain and Ruby Bridges and Wilma Deese of Gastonia; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and fives great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Eugene Land and Dale Thornburg at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eastside Baptist Church. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. LAWRENCE ‘CRASH’ DAVIS GREENSBORO - Lawrence Columbus “Crash” Davis, 82, 4767 Champion Court, died August 31, 2001 at his resi- dence. A native of Canon, GA, he was the son of the late Columbus G. and Ethel Wilson Davis. He was a graduate of Gastonia High School and Duke University and was retired from Burlington Industries as a Human Resource Manager. He had a distinguished ama- teur and professional baseball playing and coaching career. In 1935 he played shortstop on the Gaston Post 23 American National Championship team,and on the 1936 Gastonia High School State Championship team. From 1936-40 he played second base and shortstop on the Duke University baseball team and was captain of the 1939-40 teams. The Kings Mountain Herald Spinners, Northern League for Rutland, Vermont, and the Tobacco State League for Sanford, NC. From 1940-42 he was a second baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics. From 1942-45 he completed basic training and was sta- tioned at Harvard University where he served as Officer of the Day for the Navy ROTC V12 Program. While stationed there, he coached the Junior Varsity and Varsity baseball teams at Harvard. From 1946-52 he played mi- nor league baseball in the New England League for Lawrence, MA and Pawtuckette, RI and the Carolina League for the Durham Bulls, Raleigh Capitals and Reidsville Luckies. He set Carolina League records in 1948 for most doubles, most assists and most double plays by a sec- ond baseman and in 1950-51 he set Carolina League records for most putouts by a second base- man. ; From 1948-55 he taught and coaches at Bethesda High School in Bethesda, NC, and Gastonia High School. During his coaching career at Gastonia High he coached the 1953-54 State Championship teams, and in 1954 he was coach of the Gaston Post 23 American Legion team that won the state, regional and sectional champi- onships and was runner-up in the American Legion Little World Series. His honors include the 1954 Quarterback Club Award and the 1955 Coach of the N.C. Baseball All-Stars. In 1978 he was inducted into the Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame ! and in 1979 he was inducted in- to the North Carolina American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1990 he was presented the C.A. Dukes Award by Duke University for his years of out- standing volunteer leadership. Some of the volunteer posi- tions he held at Duke were class president, class chairman, mem- ber of the national council com- mittee, member of the annual fund, executive leadership board of the Triad Area and president of the Half-Century _ Club. In July 2001 he was Legion Little World Series aii % named a founding member of “the Minor League Alumni Association during the centen- nial celebration of minor league baseball held at the Smithsonian, Washington, DC. He was named the 2001 George FE. Hixon Fellow of the Greensboro Kiwanis Club. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, Greensboro Kiwanis Club, Gastonia Civitan Club, Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society, past deacon of First Presbyterian Church, High Point, past Sunday School * teacher at First Presbyterian Church, Gastonia, and served on the executive board of the Pioneer Girl Scout Council. Survivors include his broth- ers, James Hudson Davis of Charlotte and Bobby Frank Davis of Gastonia; sister, Marie Davis Blynt of Gastonia; chil- dren, Sharon Davis Jennings and husband William J. Jennings Jr. of Kings Mountain and Diana Davis Moore and husband Patrick L. Moore of Denver, CO; and grandchildren, Davis Jennings of Greensboro, Shelby Jennings of Kings Mountain and Allison Moore of Denver, CO. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sis- ter, Verdell Davis Walden; and a brother, Albert Anderson Davis. A memorial service was con- ducted by the Rev. Larry Avant at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church. Burial was private. MOZELLE BRIDGES CARICO SHELBY - Mozelle Bridges Carico, 83, 113 Wease Drive died September 4, 2001 at Hospice of Cleveland County. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Clete and Elizabeth Prealhart Bridges. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the late Will Carico. She was a homemaker and a member of Big Hill Baptist Church in Casar. She is survived by four daughters; Lucille and husband Charles Wease of Shelby, Molly and husband Larry Towery of Boiling Springs, Sylvia and hus- band Bobby Hopper of Grover; two sons, Sam and Betty Carico of Morganton, Bill Carico of Shelby, friend Morris White of Shelby, 20 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. The service will be held Thursday, September 6 at Davidson Memorial Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with Rev, Bobby Ridge officiating.
