November 8, 2001 Kings Mountain's Davidson Park will be one of the many soccer fields in Cleveland County that are filled with action Saturday and Sunday when the North Carolina Soccer Association holds its Western Regional Tournament. Eighty-two teams will be coming to the county to compete at Davidson, Gardner- Webb University and Shelby High School. Over 1,100 children ages 9-16 will compete from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. According to Terry Edwards of Kings Mountain, who is president of the Greater Cleveland County Soccer Association,27 of the 147 games will be played at Davidson Park. One of the teams competing in the under 10 division is the Kings Mountain Golden Girls, coached by Greg McDonald. Members of the team are Cassy Buongiuto, Katelynn Daniels, Megan Eakers, Emily Gates, Chelse Hale, Victoria Hale, Madison Keeter, Hannah McDougal, Whitney Moss, ry Western Region Soccer Tournament this weekend at KM’s Davidson Park Also this weekend, the Eastern Regionals will be held in Greensboro. Scism and Son of Kings Mountain, an under-13 team coached by Chip McGill, will be competing there. The top teams from the East and West will advance to the State championship at New Bern. Members of the team are Lauren Adams, Kelli Bolt, Rebecca Broadway, Jordan Burnette, Miranda Davis, Taylor Deaton, Daniela Husky, Jennifer Lingg, Hannah McGill, Carmen Scism, Danielle St Just, Kristen Tate, Tanya Tonelis, Kyerstin Vinesett, Christy Whetstine, and Catherine Logan. David Lynn, Mark Champion and Dan Potter, along with Edwards, will be helping direct the games at Davidson Park. : The Golden Girls will play at Davidson at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:15 Sunday. They'll play at Gardner-Webb University at 9:15 Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday. The GCCSA has operated for 16 years and “This is the first time we've had games at Davidson Park,” said Edwards. “One of the main reasons we have this tournament is to bring in people from other parts of the State. There will be competition in all age groups for co-ed and girls.” Kings Mountain currently has seven recreational teams in the GCSAA, and approximately two-thirds of the players are girls, Edwards said. “Soccer is the fastest growing sport in the State right now,” Edwards said. “We'd like to invite the public out to watch the action. “We really pushed hard this year to make sure we got some games at Davidson. We have such a nice facility and we like to showcase it. “We've had a lot of success in soccer,” he added. “We have some very good coaches in the girls leagues right now. The Cobras first faced Raleigh's CASL Impact and played to a 1- 1 tie off a goal by Blair Heffner. In the afternoon game, the Cobras defeated the Kernersville Sting 2-1, playing without many substitutions. A few of the Cobras were busy winning the NC 3A volleyball championship. KM sports banquet slated November 13 The Kings Mountain High School fall sports banquet will be held Tuesday, November 13. The meal will be served at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria, and the awards ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. in Barnes Auditorium. Tickets for the meal are $1 for athletes and $5 for parents. All students who participated in fall sports will be recognized and athletes who received all- star recognition will receive tro- phies.
