Downturn From 1A : outside that box,” McIntosh - said. “Now's the time for us to put our heads together.” Many ideas from a sports complex, increased telecommu- nigations; presence; and a | greater link with the Charlotte area were written down on a sheet of paper, then were priori- tized by the end of the session. “To attract new industry to Cleveland County, we must prove the strength of our work force,” Ray Denny, with the North Carolina Department of Commerce said. “The most difficult part of what we have to do is to prove we have the right stuff as far as work force,” Denny said. “It’s a moving target, it’s always changing.” Increased cooperation be- tween county and municipal governments was another thing officials and business leaders said could lead to more jobs. “I'd like to see a better work- ing relationship with the mu- nicipalities,” Shelby City Councilman Andrew Hopper said. John Harris, owner of Harris Funeral Home and County Manager Lane Alexander agreed with Hopper. Commissioner Mary Accor said companies in Cleveland County need to do more hiring locally. “If we're going to help Cleveland County, we need to hire Cleveland County,” Accor said. McIntosh said information from the meeting will be com- piled and further prioritized. The Economic and Development Commission will look at it and bring it back to the commissioners. Blanton From 1A . appointed board member, said - school system goals had not changed. “I felt good about the elec- tion,” McClain said. “I'm glad the community supported me. I just hope to continue the work we've been doing” Some of the other things McClain said he would like to work for is closing the achieve- ment gap, safe schools for teachers and children, and de- feating the merger. Smith, who taught in the Kings Mountain school system for about 25 years, said he would be accessible to discuss concerns or suggestions. Smith said he would like to see the merger defeated because of the voting rights for a group of Kings Mountain citizens. “If they were successful they would have violated the rights of the people in Kings Mountain that are in Gaston County,” Smith said. A resident of the Gaston County part of the city, Smith said he was not able to cast a vote for the Gaston County bond issue since he has not par- ticipated in the county’s school system. Grover From 1A * The State of North Carolina has increased its scrutiny on municipality sewer use ordi- nances specifically addressing deposits of grease in sewer sys- tems. Currently, Corry is re- searching the issue, and is ex- pected to be discussed in December. The town’s annual ‘Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday, December 1 at 1 p-m. said he was happy with the election, but wished more peo- ple had come out to vote. “I'm going to be glad to serve the citizens for the next two years, and if any of them need me all they have to do is call me,” he said. “I think we need to take stock and make sure that we keep the budget balanced with all of these people out of work. My biggest concern is that we don’t over-spend.” Health From 1A consultant to study the issue at the Health Dept. and Brown characterized the process to de- veloping a picture. : “What you're seeing is what showed up,” he said about the Tuesday presentation. Harry From 1A he was grateful for the town’s trust. “I was very happy they trust- ed me enough to give me this position,” he said. BEN from page 4A e A law in New York went into effect which would ban the ‘use of cell phones without a hands free device. I wish North Carolina would do the same thing. Granted the ban would not make everyone a better driver, but it would at least take one driving distraction away. ALAN from page 4A a sassy way and had soft eyes and lovely brown and golden feathers. Little Wilma was the Scarlett O'Hara of the chicken world. I swear these are the last pets . that will ever come to our house. The loss is just too hard. Maybe the winter will be bet- ter. Perhaps it will speed by and , ho one else will leave us to mourn their passing. I hope so. Someone last weekend offered, me more chickens come spring, but right now there’s no way. For the present, all we can do is try to keep moving, stay busy, and not dwell on our tragedies. That's what I'm going to . attempt anyway. That, and hear once again in my mind the bold sound of Fred's morning crow that heralded the coming of a new day. LIB from page 4A we've known what internation- al terrorism looks like from a distance. Now, after watching the events of September 11 unfold on TV in grisly images and grim realities, we know how: it feels. Since September 11 we have all noticed an upsurge of patri- otism. We show our patriotism by returning to normal, if that’s possible, but like so many peo- ple are admitting the obvious, . things won't ever be the same.
