A delicious dessert was served to 14 members and one guest. Jessie Collins, President, welcomed members. She introduced Louise Roberts, who presented an interesting program on “The Legends of Christmas.” Mrs. Roberts stated that in the 8th century an English missionary replaced German sacrifices to the sacred oak tree as there was no custom of decorating trees in Germany. However, the Christmas tree is a German tradition, and it has become America’s all-time favorite decoration. It may range from a small table tree to the gigantic national tree in Washington, DC. Martin Luther used the first candles on Christmas trees in Germany. It was an attempt to affected him. St. Francis of Assisi originated Christmas car- ols and nativity scenes were originated in 1224 by St. Francis. In 1822 Englishman Clement Moore wrote “The Night Before Christmas” to please his chil- dren. And in 1843 Charles Dickens wrote “The Christmas Carol.” Santa Claus is distinctly American. In 1842 a 16-year-old boy from England designed the first Christmas card. : Poinsettias have long symbolized the holiday spirit with their colorful foliage. Another symbol of Christmas is the candy cane: It’s shape, like that of a shepherd's staff, symbolizes guidance and protection for the shep- herd. The color red means sacrifice and white symbolizes purity. Fourteen beautiful framed pictures painted by the late Elizabeth Gamble were passed around. Each picture was a different flower found in the Bible with the Bible book, chapter and verse beneath the flower. Ethel McGinnis read a poem “A Gardener's Christmas.” Timely tips were given by Mrs. Carpenter. Put two or three inches of mulch around trees and shrubs. It prevents cold damage, keeps in mois- ture and protects roots during the winter. Cuttings of holly, magnolia, pine and boxwood keep longer if soaked in cold water overnight. The Happy Holidays arrangement was a very beautifully decorated mantel with greenery, lights and candles.
