By BEN LEDBETTER Staff Writer The Kings Mountain Woman's Club wants to give the Kings Mountain Fire and Police Departments a heat-sen- sitive camera. But for now, the Woman's Club decided to honor Kings Mountain's public safety work- ers by serving them lunch last Wednesday at the Woman's Club. : Donna Logan, Woman's Club Public Affairs Director, said she hoped to continue with the holi- day lunch on an annual basis “Firefighters and Police offi- cers just need to be recognized for what they do,” Logan said. “We have an emergency here they're going to be there.” The cost of the camera, Logan said, is estimated between $10- Woman's Club feeds emergency personnel $20 thousand. St. Matthew's The Cleveland County Red Cross has been awarded a $75,000 grant by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust of Winston-Salem for its “Second Century Campaign.” The funds will be used to equip and furnish two new blood collection centers, one in Shelby and another in Kings Mountain. The Shelby facili- ty will be built on a four-acre tract of land on Fallston Road and will serve as the Chapter head- quarters. The Kings Mountain office will be locat- ed in the downtown area near the library and his- torical museum. Both locations will offer a full range of Red Cross services including health and safety education and disaster relief services, ac- cording to Executive Director Rick Dancy. “Never has the need for blood been greater than it has been during the past year and we ex- pect the need to continue to increase in years to come,” said Dancy. “Having our own blood col- lection centers here in Cleveland County will make it more convenient for our donors and more cost effective for the Red Cross. The grant from Kate B. The Chapter has ranked as one of the top performing blood collection programs in the nation for five consecutive years and the new blood centers will help the Chapter maintain its leadership role in the Red Cross bio-medical system. Check The CLASSIFIEDS! 704-739-7496 bk HEH er BHR ee December 20, 2001 Fire Chief Frank Burns, whose department was still in- vestigating two house fires on King St. Wednesday afternoon, said the lunch gave him a chance to take a break. “It’s'a busy time for us, and we certainly appreciate the ladies taking time out of their busy life to do it for us to,” The camera would aid the de- partments in investigations, Burns said. “It would give us the capabil- ity to be able to go into a smoke-filled house and it would let us locate the victim a whole lot quicker,” Burns said. The camera would also help find where a person has been in ‘a crime scene and would help find a missing person in the woods, Burns said.
