Mounties drop two at East Gaston
Kings Mountain High s basketball teams
ended their non-conference schedule
Tuesday night at East Gaston, dropping a
doubleheader:

stop East Gaston's senior guard Brooke
Wilkinson, who scored 15 points to break
the 1,000-point mark. She finished the game
with 1,012 points after hitting her 1,000th
point with a 3-point field goal with 6:16 left
in the half.
Rene Leonard scored 12 points and
Jennifer Wheeler added 10 points for the
Lady Warriors, who improved to 5-3.
Shonda Cole led Kings Mountain with 16
points and Danielle Gill added 11.
The Lady Mountaineers led 20-19 at half-
time, but were outscored 19-7 in the third
period as the Lady Warriors gained revenge .
for an overtime loss a week earlier in Kings
Mountain.
Led by Wilkinson's eight points, the Lady
Warriors went on a 13-0 third quarter scot-
ing run that put the game away.

Kings Mountain's basketball
teams gave favored Fred T.
Foard’s Tigers all the competi-
tion they could stand in the
Southwestern Foothills 3A
Conference opener Friday night
in Newton.
The Kings Mountain girls led
for21/2 quarters before falling
to the'more experienced Lady
Tigers 70-55, and the scrappy
‘Mountaineers held the upper
rand on the State’s fifth-ranked
3A club in the nightcap before
the Tigers came from behind in
the fourth quarter to win their
eighth straight game, 74-66.
The games ended the 2001
portion of the Mountaineers’
season. The boys go into the
break with a 5-7 record and the
girls are 6-6.
Fred T. Foard outscored
Danny McDowell's charges 30-
20 over the final eight atten
after KM led 32-28 at halftime
and 46-44 going into the fourth
quarter.
John Paul Sitnmons scored 32
points, including 31 over the
final three periods, to lead the
Tigers. The 6-4 senior also dom-
inated the boards.
Simmons connected on 14
straight shots from the foul line.
Andre Graham scored eight
of his 11 points in the final 1
1/2 minutes of the game as the
Tigers held off the
Mountaineers. He hit five of six
shots from the foul line during
that stretch.

Tigers. Shonda Cole scored 21
and Danielle Gill 19 for Kings
Mountain.
The Mountaineers return to
action on Friday, January 4 with
a home doubleheader against
Burns.
