Folwuary 7, 2002 The Kings Mountain Herald Page 5B Mounties beat R-S, host St. Stephens Friday Kings Mountain High' s bas- ketball teams swept R-S Central Tuesday night and will play their final regular season home games Friday against St. | Stephens. The Mountaineers, who defeated R-S 77-42, take a 9-1 conference record and share of first place in the Southwestern Foothills into the final two regu- lar season games. The Mountaineers close out the reg- ular season Tuesday night against co-leader Hickory in Hickory. The KM girls defeated R-S 39- 29 to run their conference record to 4-5, but unless they pull upsets in their final two games they would have to win the upcoming conference tourna- ment to qualify for the State playoffs. Josh Gash scored 15 points, Derrick Smith 12 and DeShawn Young 10 to lead the Mountaineers fo victory over ‘the Hilltoppers. KM led by only WEATHERS From 2B Most of this will be forgotten when the wrestler literally inhales the pre-match meals totaling approximately 34 ‘hero sandwiches, 32 cans of soda, 81 cupcakes, 42 oranges, and 32 candy bars. This can be a way of life for the wrestler during the wrestling season. But, all the sacrifices make up the average wrestler with an average season record of 12 wins and 8 losses. Just imagine the sacrifice to earn the undefeated record, but then again he’s not average. He's the champion. (Author unknown). (Phil Weathers is Director of Student Services for Kings Mountain Schools and former KM Junior High wrestling coach). Free Gift 9-6 after the first quarter but increased the margin to 28-17 at halftime and 41-27 going into the fourth quarter. Coach Danny McDowell played all of his players, and all of them took part in the bal- anced scoring attack. “That was the good thing about this game,” McDowell said. “We didn’t play well over- all, but we played well in spurts and everybody got to play.” McDowell said his team can’t afford a letdown Friday if they want to make sure next Tuesday’s game at Hickory is for the conference champi- onship. : “That's the way it’s supposed to be,” he said. “You don’t want to dodge anybody. You want to play the best.” Kings Mountain’s girls fell behind early and trailed R-S 12- 7 after the first quarter and 20- 16 at the half. But they regrouped at intermission and took a 29-27 lead going into the fourth quarter. They outscored R-S 10-2 over the final eight minutes. Shonda Cole led the KM scor- ing with 18 points. No decision yet on baseball field house Quick kicks: East Burke High School ended a lengthy search for a new head football coach last week when they hired former R-S Central and Freedom head coach Mike Biggerstaff. Biggerstaff has been out of coaching for the past 15 years. He replaces Tom Harper, who was dismissed after going 8-24 over the past three seasons... Look for Mark Latham to do a bang-up job as head coach of the East Gaston Warriors. The Warriors were 8-24 the past three years under Ron Froneberger but Latham will bring a lot of enthusiasm to the pro- gram. He will also reap the benefits of players coming up from a JV team that finished 8-2 last fall. In a few years he will be getting players off the Stanley Middle School team which won the Gaston County Conference last year... KMHS will soon be interviewing candidates for the defensive coordi- nator’s position, which was vacated when Latham signed on as the new East Gaston coach. We hope the School System is actively recruiting quali- fied Black candi- about the best way to provide a sewage system, and about the location of the facility. The par- ents group requesting the field house had dates to apply for Gary Stewart suggested that it that position... HY be connected to The KM School . the home - Board did not Editor dugout. take any action on a proposed baseball /softball field house during Friday's work session. The Board still has some questions However, some people feel it would block fans’ view of part of the playing field and would be better located behind the batting cage. Also, the School System's architect, Roger Holland, is working on a drawing of the pro- posed facility... University of Tennessee football coach Phil Fulmer was at Crest High School Thursday to speak at the Chargers’ football ban- quet. Tennessee is one of numerous Division I schools recruiting the Chargers’ 6-5, 265-pound All-American guard Brandon Jefferies. Jefferies was scheduled to make a trip to UNC last week, and N.C. State and several other big time schools are courting him. Although they've been getting ver- bal commitments for sev- eral months now, Wednesday was the first * day colleges could actual- ly sign a player... Crest end Monte Smith, the defensive player of the year in the Southwestern Foothills 3A, Wednesday signed to play for Appalachian State. With all the talk going around about Kings Mountain players transferring to Crest, it’s good to see a Crest player become a Mountaineer. 100301 when you ad 20 Rett more a participating stores, so Feb. 8th-10th 2002 Dillards, JCPenney, Matthews Belk, Sears Located on I-85 at New Hope Road, Mon.-Sat. 10am-9pm ¢ Sun. 12:30pm-6pm 704-867-1847 Simply present To Chaat 00 3 Sha a | EASTRIDGE MALL A 70 Hoge Re 8 Fang ENG, 1 Seaton) me eee erm Gresirn] eit?
