es Mae 2A The Kings Mountain Herald ‘Jane Morlan in SC | Music Hall of Fame Jane Morlan, daughter of “i Ruby Birmingham of Kings Mountain and the late Van Birmingham, was recently inducted into the South Carolina’ Music Educators Association Hall of Fame. Morlan is choral teacher at Hillcrest High School in the Greenville County, SC School District. The honor salutes outstand- ing band, choral and orchestra teachers on the elementary, high school and college levels. Morlan received her award from her friend, Lynn Grimsley, the association’s vice president. Morlan was her supervising teacher when she began her teaching career. Li “The first thing that went through my mind was that I'm - JANE MORLAN too young,” Morlan said of her selection. “But this really does mean something to me. This is an affirmation to me. I am enlly proud of this.” To be considered for induc- tion, one must be a member of the association. Morlan was nominated by Betty Jo Fersner, a retired music educator. Morlan, a native of Gastonia, is a graduate of East Carolina University and became active in the association while a student there. She has 32 years experi- ence in teaching, including the last four at Hillcrest High. Her first year at the school only one student was named to the All- State Chorus. This year, 14 were named. Morlan has served as vice- president, president-elect and president of the organization. The student who chooses the College Prep track must pass four English courses and three courses in science and social studies. Beginning with 2002-03 ninth graders, a fourth math is required and two credits in the same second language as well as two credits in physical edu- cation. No career or technical classes are required but it is recom- mended a student take at least one credit in arts discipline. All four courses of studies must demonstrate computer profi- ciency through state testing. Three electives are required and the student must pass the high school competency test. The Occupational Course of Study requirements include four credits in occupational English, three credits in occupa- tional math, two credits in life 11, skills science, two credits in squial studies, two,creditsyin, i physical education, four credits in career / technical electives and six credits in occupational preparation. No foreign lan- guage is required. A career port- folio is required of the Occupational Course of Study track. It is very important that stu- dents take seriously the process of choosing their course of study and registering for its classes. Registration for next school year at Kings Mountain High School is March 4-8. Students ~ start the registration process in mid February with the coun- selors and teachers. It is very important that parents become actively involved in the registra- tion process by discussing and reviewing the registration process with their son or daughter. The student needs to choose a Course of Study (College Prep or College Tech Prep) and a Career Pathway (Career Technical / Arts). The Course of Study choice should be selected according to the stu- dent’s interests, abilities, career and further educational plans.
