She chose the Kings Mountain Senior Center as a way to stay active. Humphreys is one of several volunteers at the senior center who perform a variety of daily duties. While the center honors their volunteers later this year, April 21-27 has been designated as National Volunteer Week. During a recent weekday morning at the senior center she was keeping records of the people who attended lunch while singing and piano playing filled the room. A native of Kings Mountain, she’s lived across the east coast, and later came back to live in the city where she retired after work- ing 23 years at Winn-Dixie where she was the general merchandise manager. She has also worked at stores in Gastonia and remembered when Belks had a store in Kings Mountain. DOROTHY HUMPHREYS Humphreys said one of the reasons she started volunteering after retirement was so she could get out of the house. “You can’t sit home and look at four walls,” she said. “It just don’t work. You've got to do something.” Soon after she started coming to the senior center she started to volunteer. “Well, I check all the people that attend. We have to keep a record of it,” Humphreys said. “Find out if you're going to eat tomorrow so we'll know how much food to order, that sort of thing,” she said. Humphreys also helps out at her church, Kings Mountain First Baptist. But volunteering’s not her only activity. She also travels. “We just came in from Savannah. Our son lives in Savannah,” she said. Humphreys travels with her husband William Edward across the country in their RV and they have been to other places that includ- ed Las Vegas and Florida. Different things keep Humphreys coming back to the senior cen- ter and the chance to connect with people of a similar age is one of those. “Well you've’ got conversation, you've got enterbainmeént;-they . « play bingo (and) just do all sorts of things,” sheisaid. v.17 y/ Keeping people coming to'the senior center has also been’some* thing Humphreys has tried to do. She remembered a woman whose husband had died and was coming on certain days. Humphreys told her the company of others would help. “Just have to give some of them encouragement to come on back,” she said. Anonymous call helps KM cops in drug bust Anonymous tips from citizens led to the arrest of two Kings Mountain men on drug charges Friday afternoon. According to Det. Lisa Proctor of the Kings Mountain Police, the department received an anonymous call that some- one in the area of Grace Street had drugs on their possession. An officer was dispatched to the area. According to Proctor, as he was arriving he saw a car leaving that fit the description of the vehicle the suspects were reported riding in. Proctor said Officer Jerry Tesenair pursued the vehicle and a chase ensued. The vehicle was stopped on Fairview Street. All occupants of the car were detained until other officers arrived on the scene. Proctor said the driver of the vehicle was arrested for traffic violations, and other occupants were “patted down” for safety reasons. Proctor said when she arrived at the scene she recognized the suspects as ones that the depart- ment had received anonymous calls about. Proctor said Tymothy Robert Jones and Ishmar Jabaar Grier, both 20, were arrested on drug charges. Jones was charged with felony possession of cocaine with intent to sell and deliver, and Grier was charged with trafficking in cocaine and pos- session with intent to sell and deliver. Jones was jailed under a $2,500 bond and Grier was jailed under a $50,000 bond. Proctor said the street value of the cocaine confiscated was about $7,000.
