visits Stowe Gardens
Thirteen members of the Open Gate
Garden Club met May 8 at Daniel Stowe
Botanical Gardens.
It is the site of rapid development as the
40-year master plan takes shape. Several
decades from now the 450 acre plan will
take place.
The initial phase includes an elegant visi-
tor pavilion, 12 fountains, four themed gar-
dens and an outdoor amphitheater for con-
certs and other events.
Members enjoyed the combined beauty of
nature and Southern horticulture.
Perennials are artistically arranged in an
ever-changing display of color.
The Canal Garden is a tropical paradise.
It includes elephant ear, hibiscus, banana,
iris and 18 potted palms.
The Cottage Garden is a mix of pre-1920s
southern gardens which included bulbs,
annuals, shrubs, hollyhock and roses. Each
plant or shrub is identified by its botanical
name and common name.
Stowe Gardens is a place where nature
and horticulture blend into one.
After the tour of the garden and gift
shop, members met at a cafeteria in
