Cae { May 23, 2002 “CHURCH BRIEF Yard sale, singing to benefit 2-year-old transplant patient Two fund-raising efforts to help with the medical expenses of 2-year-old Dalton Johnson are sched- uled in Kings Mountain. Dalton has been diagnosed with Hurler Syndrome, a disease characterized by an enlarged liver and spleen, persistent rhinitis, coarse facial fea- tures, corneal clouding, claw hands and coronary artery stenosis, bone deformities, hydropcephalus and pro- gressive retardation. Most children with the disease die by the age of 10. Dalton recently under- went a second bone marrow transplant at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. His medical bills are “tremendous,” according to his physician in Durham, Mahmoud Mustafa, MD. JOHNSON There will be a yard sale Saturday, May 25 from 8 a.m.-12 noon at Family Worship Center Church of God, 1818 Shelby Road. Clothes, toys, books, baby items and other items will be sold. In addition, cakes, pies, brownies and other baked goods will be sold along with coffee, drinks and breakfast items. There will be a benefit singing for Dalton Thursday, June 13 at 7 p.m. at Midview Baptist Church, 703 Margrace Road, Kings Mountain. Persons attending the singing will be asked to give a love offering. Persons who cannot attend the singing but would like to donate Ay do so at ably First Union National Bank. Dr. Mitchell to preach final sermon Dr. Donald Mitchell will preach his last sermon as interim pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Kings Mountain, on Sunday, May 26. Morrow II recently pinned on his “wings of gold” and became unrestricted Naval Aviator #26538. Ensign Morrow received his wings from his mother and father, Avis and Keith Morrow of Kings Mountain, and was joined by several of his friends at the ceremony at Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, FL. He has been assisted to Naval Air Station Mayport near Jacksonville, FL. and will be flying the SH-60B Seahawk helicopter. Next month, Ensign Morrow will be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. He is a 1996 graduate of Kings Mountain High School and a 2000 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He is the grandson of Virginia W. Owens and the late Charles E. Owens, and Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Morrow. Summer Reading program to begin The Summer Reading Club at Mauney Memorial Library will start with a story telling program by Donna Washington on Friday, May 24 at 10 a.m. in the meeting room of the Harris Children’s Wing of the library. Washington is a story teller who performs across the United States. Regular programming will begin the following week: Ages 9-11, Monday 10 a.m.; ages 3-5, Tuesday 10 a.m.; ages 6-8, Wednesday 10 a.m., ages 0-2, Thursday 10 a.m. Each child attending the program will receive a weekly prize. Head Start staff honored at lunch The staff of Cleveland County Head Start was hon- ored recently at an apprecia- tion luncheon at Deerbrook Golf Club Restaurant in Shelby. Dr. Ann White with The Speakers Network, Inc. pro- vided staff development training. Special recognition was made for staff members. Vickie Wray was recognized for 10 year of service, and Gilda Hunt was recognized for 25 years of service. Head Start operates in all three of the county’s school systems, with Kings Mountain District Schools serving as the administra- tive unit. The program receives Smart Start funding to operate thee of its 17 classes. Head Start is in its 37th year serving pre-school children in Cleveland County.
