Sixty-seven young women from 19 area cities and towns
will be presented to society in the Junior Charity League of
Sheer s 57th annual Debutante Ball to be held Saturday,
June 8.
The weekend's activities begin Friday morning with a
registration and coffee at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L.
Lyndon Hobbs on Brookwood Drive. Friday evening will
include a parent dinner dance at Cleveland Country Club
and a debutante dinner dance at North Lake Country Club.
Debutantes and their chief marshals will be honored
Saturday morning with a father-daughter brunch at
Cleveland County Club: A mother’s luncheon will be held
Satu at the Lakemont Drive home of Mrs. Charles
Harry III.
The formal presentation of the debutantes will be held at
8 p.m. at Cleveland Community College, with Jeff Renn as
commentator. The event will include the debutantes, their
chief marshals, assistant marshals, mothers and invited
guests.
Mrs. Ann Bema and Mrs. Anne Goss are co-chairs for this
year’s ball. Mrs. Loann Meekins is serving as secretary to
the debs.
Local debutantes include:
Carrie Brinkley, daughter of David Carl
and Marie Myers Brinkley of Kings
Mountain. She is the granddaughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Carl Brinkley of Valdese and Mr.
and Mrs. Roland Myers of Clover, SC. Chief
Marshal is David Carl Brinkley. Assistant
marshal is John Bradly Goforth.
Allison Elizabeth Hager, daughter of
Robert Heman and Nancye McDowell
Hager of Kings Mountain. She is the grand-

The Junior Charity League of Shelby is 68
years old, evolving in 1934 from the Music
and Arts Division of the Shelby Woman's
Club when 57 energetic women banded
together to help. their needy neighbors dur-
ing the depth of the depression. They
called themselves the Shelby Civic League
before becoming the Junior Charity League.
During the past 60 years the Junior
Charity League has furnished aid to the
community in amounts totalling more than
$1 million.

| The 2002 Debutante Ball is the 57th sponsored by the 10 ase Sing-Along, Tropical Tanning Center
League. The first ball was held June 7, 1946 with 31 ladies third Tuesday of each 215 N. Mountain Street
presented at the Shelby Armory.
Accepting invitations as “sponsors” of the ball were 24
high school girls from Shelby, one from Hickory, two from
Kings Mountain and four from Lincolnton. The event was
held at the Shelby Armory with Paul Harmon and his 13-
iece band presenting music.
The 1978 ball was the largest ever when 131 debs were
presented. The 2002 debs will carry on a tradition of years
past by making lifelong friends as they gather for the festiv-
ities and socializing.
