Kings Mountain Hospital
Auxiliary has awarded two $2,000
scholarships to outstanding stu-
dents going into the health care
field. These awards are made pos-
sible through donations made to
the Hospital Auxiliary Tree of Love
project. This is the sixth year the
auxiliary has given these scholar-
ships.
At the Kings Mountain High
School awards ceremony recently,
Stuart Wayne Heffner, son of
David and Tammie Heffner, and
Amanda Renee Mitchell, daughter
of Bob and Rhonda Nivens, each
received a $2,000 scholarship to be
given annually in $500 increments
over a four year period, as the stu-
dent continues to qualify.
Heffner has been active in many
high school clubs and activities. He
has served as Secretary / Treasurer
of the Latin Club, SPO representa-

He has been on three mission

Project Playground, Relay for Life,
Cleveland Regional Medical
Explorers and CHAMPS tutoring.
He plans to attend UNC-Chapel
Hill majoring in Biology /Pre-
Medicine. His career goal is to
become a reconstructive plastic
surgeon.
Mitchell has been active in
school clubs and activities. She has
been a member of the Kings
Mountain High School band, SPO,
Medical Explorers, Key Club,
Interact Club, National Honor
Society, Beta Club and was in the
senior play Romeo and Juliet.
KM POLICE NEWS
She has participated in Relay for
Life, Teen Pregnancy Forum, serv-
ing dinner to the homeless shelter
once a month, worked on project
playground and visited in retire-
ment homes on a regular basis. She
helps with her church bazaars, is
active in the youth group and is a
member of the band ensemble.
She was accepted into the sum-
mer 2000 Nursing Exploration
week in Chapel Hill. During the
summer of 2001, she was chosen
by the People to People Student
Ambassador program to represent
the United States in Europe as a
student ambassador. She plans to
attend East Carolina University
and study nursing. Her career goal
is to receive a master’s degree in
midwifery.
Anyone interested in picking up
an application may do so in
December. Deadline is February 1.
AMANDA MITCHELL
Man sought in robbery at used
A man who reportedly helped
the owner of a local quick stop
load some drink machines while
supposedly waiting on his wife to
bring money to buy a car is being
sought by Kings Mountainn police
for armed robbery.
Gilbert Hamrick, 61, owner of
PSL Quick Stop at 1726 Shelby
Road, told police he was robbed by
a Black male Thursday afternoon.
The man took an undisclosed
amount of money off Hamrick,
more from a brief case, and then
grabbed the keys to a 1989 Mazda
from the PSL used car lot and left
the scene.
The car was recovered Friday in
Shelby.
The suspect is described as 6-
feet, 240 pounds and was wearing
a black pull over shirt and black
pants.
According to the report filed by
Cpl. T.D. Adams, the suspect
reportedly got out of a blue
Lincoln that was driven by a Black
female, and came into the store to
ask Hamrick the price of the
Mazda. When they agreed on a
price, the man reportedly said he
would send his wife to get the
money.
Adams’ report said the man
hung around and actually helped
load three soft drink machines on a
pickup truck, and then inquired
about buying a battery. Police said
when Hamrick went into a back
room where the batteries were
located, the suspect reportedly put
a 9 milimeter handgun to the back
of Hamrick’s head and told him to
kneel down and give him his wal-
let. Adams’ report said the man
then went to the front of the store
and stole a brief case containing
more money, and left the scene in
4-wheeler, trailer stolen
A 4-wheeler and trailer were
stolen Wednesday at The Printin’
Press, 712 Cleveland Avenue.
The 1999 Honda TRX 4-wheeler,
owned by Robert Bolin, is valued
at $7,200. The trailer, owned by
Bobby Bridges, is valued at $2,400,

In an unrelated incident the
same day, police were called to
Food Lion where a man reportedly
stole over $1,600 worth of food.
An employee told police she saw
a young boy outside with two bug-
gies full of food that was not
bagged, and that the boy had an
older man with him. When she
asked to see a receipt, the older
man alledgedly tried to punch her
and started pushing the buggy
down the parking lot.
The report said the buggy turned
over in the parking lot and the

According to Ptl. S. Hood's
report, Cleveland County deputies
were later called to a domestic dis-
pute at a house on Rollingbrook
Court and found the white van

stolen goods, contributing to the
delinquency of a minor, assault on

of Bessemer City left the road,
traveled through three yards and
struck a residence on Northwoods

$10,000. Tate was charged with
