\ \ 2A SRS ron i OBITUARIES The Kings Mountain Herald GUYNELL OLIVER KINGS MOUNTAIN - Guynell Oliver, 84, 117 Parkdale Circle, died August 24, 2002 at Wendover Hospice of Cleveland County. A native of Lancaster, SC, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Elizabeth Humphrey Robinson and wife of the late Ray Bill Oliver. She was a former member of Piedmont Baptist Church and was retired from Park Yarn Mills with 37 years of ‘service. She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Humphries and husband Charles, Chris Petersen, and Linda Moss and husband Larry, all of Kings Mountain; Darlene Killian and husband Joe of York, SC, and Marlene Denton of Gastonia; sisters, Sarah Kelly of Bessemer City and Eva Mae Taylor of Cowpens, SC; nine grand- children and eight great- grandchildren. The funeral was conduct- ed by the Rev. Cindy S. Coleman and Chaplain Carolyn Sears at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. BOBBY EARL MABRY GROVER - Bobby Earl Mabry, 69, 107 Amesbury Road, died August 27, 2002 © at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Union County, SC, he was the son of the late Wade and Agnes Fowler Mabry. He was also preced- ed in death by his sister, Grace Hall, and brother, Lee Edward Mabry. He was a member of Love Valley Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, and was retired from Hoeschest Celanese, Spartanburg, SC. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, the North Carolina National Gliard™ and was a member of the Grover Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Lovelace Mabry of Grover; son, William Earl Mabry and wife Donna of Shelby; daughter, Sherry M. Biddix and husband Donnie of Kings Mountain; brother, William Shetley of Gaffney, SC; sisters, Lois McAbee of Gaffney, SC, Johnnie Yarboro of Blacksburg, SC, and June Gardner of Spartanburg, SC; and grandchildren, Ray Biddix, Matthew Biddix, Brandon Mabry, and Brett Mabry. The funeral will be con- ducted by the Rev. Barry Philbeck at 2 p.m, Thursday at Love Valley Baptist Church. Burial will be in Grover Cemetery. Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. CARNETTE POPLIN KINGS MOUNTAIN - Carnette Huffstetler Poplin, 93, 615 North Piedmont Avenue, former resident of Gastonia, died August 24, 2002 at The Haven in Pineville. She was a native of Cleveland County and wife of the late Thomas Eugene Poplin. She was a homemak- er and member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church She is survived by her son, William R. “Bill” Poplin of Greenville, SC; daughter, Betty P. Furr and husband Frank E. Furr of Fort Mill, SC; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.’ The funeral was conduct-" ed by Dr. Edgar Cooper at 3 p-m. Monday at St. ° Matthews Lutheran Church. JACK HARDIN SPARTANBURG, SC - Jack Everette Hardin, 77, 96 Delray Drive, died August - 22,2002 at his home. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Robert Curtis and Ella Clark Hardin. He was retired from A&P Tea Company with 32 years of service, and later worked “with Ingles, Piggly-Wiggly, Harris-Teeter and Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, the E. Gibson Davis Sunday School Class, and had sung in several quartets for over 20 years. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Huffstetler Hardin of thé home; son, the Rev. Larry Everette Hardin and wife Jo Carol of Maudlin; daughters, Jackie Hardin Philbeck and hus- band Jerry of Shelby and Pamela Hardin Moore and husband Harold of Moore; brother, Ben A. Hardin of Boiling Springs; nine grand- children, five step-grandchil- dren, and 11 great-grand- children. The funeral was conduct- ed by the Revs. Larry E. A native of Spartanburg County, he was the husband of the late Alma Blanton Hayes and son of the late Oscar and Emma Jane Smith Hayes. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church where he served as a dea- con, Sunday School teacher and greeter. He was a volun- teer with Hospice and Meals on Wheels. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by two daughters, Barbara H. Price High School in Salisbury and Woods Morgan Beauty and Barber College in Charlotte. She retired from the City of Kings Mountain, having worked for the Recreation Department for 26 years, most of the time as manager of the Davidson Park Pool Facility. She was as member of Bynum Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served many years as trustee, stew- ardess, missionary, class leader director, and usher. She was also well known for her community service. She was a licensed foster parent for many years for the Cleveland County Department of Social Services. She was a life member of the Cleveland County branch of the NAACP. She was a member of Adah Chapter No. 7 Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of Emma V. Kelley No. 748 Daughters of L.B.P.O.E. of W., Shelby. She was preceded in death by her son, Curtis Lee Roberts; brothers, John and Louis Aldrich; and sister, Precola MRS. A native of Gaston County, she was the daugh- ter of the late A.E. Jarrell and Zoe Anna Jenkins Jarrell. She was also preced- ed in death by her son, Nicky Jarrell, and grandson Terry Jarrell. She is survived by her son, Danny “Hammer” Jarrell of Dallas; daughters, Glenda Edwards and husband Kenneth Michael of Gastonia, and Jean Murray and husband Scott of Kings Mountain; brothers. A.E. August 29, 2002 GUARD From 1A “I think I just reciprocate the feeling amongst all our soldiers,” he said. “Obviously, anytime you have the opportunity to represent your hometown, state and country - that’s kind of what we do it for as citizen soldiers.” Some soldiers may be making sacrifices such as financial ones but Williams said that money is not a real object. “These soldiers are look- ing forward to their chance to give something back,” he said. The 505th Battalion | is one one of the largest in the state. Other parts of the 505th are in Mooresville, Lexington, Mount Airy, Forest City and Elkin. Approximately 25 employees of the two Grover plants will lose their jobs with most of them leaving on Friday, accord- ing to Cleveland County N.C. Employment Security Commission Office Manager Antwon Keith. The displaced workers will have usual benefits available to them such as COBRA, according to Ken Warshefki, human resources manager at the company’s headquarters. There will be no severance for the dis- placed workers, he said. Two of the displaced workers will be assigned to an affiliate plant in Mississippi, Warshefki said. “We're just trying to con- solidate and trying to hold the company together,” he said. Some of the company’s main customers Jaye not been ordes Tg af their ustial levels, fie sai Grover plant manager Larry Brown said he hates to see the plant close and that he had a good work force. “I think (they were) just a good bunch of team players working for the cus- tomers,” he said. Keith said some hiring is going on. “Hopefully some of them will be able to get back into the job market as soon as possible,” he said. While it won't be a major loss of jobs, Keith said it would be a general blow to the county which had a 12.2 percent jobless rate for July. Keith said some people will be staying there for the next few weeks to finish closing. Mitchell County had the state’s highest unemploy- ment rate at 14.2 percent for. July. Compared to June, rates - fell in 57 of 100 counties. Most of the new job announcements have been with employers locating in the Kings Mountain area. Sara Lee, Owens and Minor, Blachford RP Corp., NVR and Encompass have all located or disclosed plans to locate in the Kings Mountain area.
