All Burns 0-0 2-0 Hickory 0-0 2-0 (See Standings 2B) SHELBY EERE EE The Kings Mountain Herald September 12, 2002 GARY STEWART / THE HERALD Kings Mountain quarterback Derek Smith (7) pitches the ball out in Friday's 53-28 loss to South Point at Lineberger Stadium in Belmont. Mounties see red (and Brown) in 53-28 loss to South Point By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Kings Mountain's Mountaineers played with South Point's Big Red Machine for a quarter Friday night at Belmont’s Lineberger Stadium. Dave Farquharson’s Mounties actually led the highly-touted Red Raiders 14-13 after quarterback Derek Smith ran a 14-yard touch- down around right end as the first quarter expired. NISSAN IT'S... But over the next 26 minutes and 43 seconds, the Red Raiders scored five unanswered touch- downs and routed the Mountaineers 53-28 for their sec- ond straight lop-sided victory. The Raiders had opened their season a week earlier with a 55-21 waltz past 2A Lincolnton. Kings Mountain, which was upset b East Gaston 30-20, fell to 0-2 head- ing into another big test at home Friday night against Gastonia Forestview (2-0). Coach Farquharson said he saw improvement on both offense and defense, but again mental mis- takes aided the opponent. On KM's first possession, a bad snap on a punt attempt resulted in South Point taking over posses- sion at the KM 17 yard line. On their second play from scrim- mage, South Point’s talented jun- ior quarterback Javar Williams scored from one yard out for a 7-0 lead. See Mounties, 2B Mounties play Jags here Friday By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers hope the green, green grass of home will bring better results when they host a tough Gastonia Forestview eleven Friday night at John Gamble Stadium. a In their first two contests, the Mountaineers have been outscored 83-48 and have yet to force their opponent to punt. Forestview, 2-0, presents another tough challenge as the Jaguars are looking to challenge South Point for the Big South 3A championship for the second year in a row. The two teams shared the top spot last fall. And, except for the uniforms, which are silver and black as opposed to South Point’s red and white, the Jaguars will look similar to the Raiders. Scott Lee, who was a longtime assistant coach at South Point before landing the Forestview head job, runs the same Georgia Southern offense which he helped the Raiders install several years back. And, while the players carrying out the offensive assignments may not be as well known, in early victories they have been just as impressive. Chris Rayfield takes over at quarterback from the graduated Demario Crosby, who had been the Jags’ top signal caller the first four years of their existence. Superstar running back Mario Dye, who was also a four-year starter, is also gone but taking his place is a well-balanced running attack featuring a half dozen players. Willie Moore, an All-Conference line- backer last year, returns at fullback and the 195-pounder runs very similar to * star of the South Point Red Bone offe. Joey Brown.
