Shelby here Friday night
for final non-league game

Two arch rivals trying to turn
around lackluster preseasons will
clash in their final nonconference
game of the season Friday night at
John Gamble Stadium.
Shelby’s Golden Lions, a peren-
nial State power, comes into
Gamble Stadium with a 1-2 record
to face a Mountaineer team that
has dropped all three of its presea-
son encounters against teams from
the Big South 3A Conference.
Shelby, which is being picked to
lumps, losing 30-20 to East Gaston,
53-28 to South Point and 21-14
against Forestview.
Shelby has dropped consecutive
games to its other two county
rivals, Burns (26-21 on a last-
minute touchdown pass) and Crest
(40-0).
Although their record isn’t that
impressive and the Lions will also
be playing this week without some
key starters, Kings Mountain
Coach Dave Farquharson expects
to see a typical Shelby team that
specializes in a methodical running
attack and hard-hitting defense. .
Farquharson. “They're a good,
solid team. They made some mis-
‘takes against Burns and they made
some mistakes against Crest, but
they're going to be a good football
team and they're going to be well
coached, and they're going to be
up for us and come in here rearing
to go.”
A 19-10 victory over Kings
Mountain last year snapped a
three-game losing streak by the
Lions and started a 10-game win-
ning streak that carried them three
rounds into the State playoffs.
This season the Lions have been
win the Midwest 2A Conference,
opened its season with a 10-7 win
over the same 4A Freedom team
that Kings Mountain dominated

County Jamboree.

ment over the previous two losses to East Gaston and
South Point, forced the Jaguars to punt from their own 18

The Mountaineers” Adrian Parker fielded the kick on his
own 38 and returned it to the Forestview 36 yard line, giv-
ing the KM offense a golden opportunity to post its first
victory of the year.
Quarterback Chris Jolly under threw a wide open
Cortney Smith in the end zone, but connected with 6-foot-
4 Ta Tae Roebuck for a first down at the 14. Facing third
and eight from the 11, Jolly tried to find Smith again in
the end zone but this time Carroll made a perfect read
and picked the ball off and returned it to the 27.
Kings Mountain forced another punt and got the ball
back again with 25 seconds remaining, and this time
Forestview’s Justin Mack intercepted a desperation Jolly
pass to end the game.
KM Coach Dave Farquharson said he was pleased with
his team’s effort, even though turnovers and mental mis-
takes plagued them throughout the contest. Forestview

game Wednesday afternoon
at John Gamble Stadium.
Coach Monty Deaton’s
Patriots showed improve-
ment from their previous
two games, which they split
with Pumpkin Center and
West Lincoln, but mistakes
continued to plague them.
They were scheduled to
travel to Crest yesterday
and will travel to Lincolnton
next Wednesday for a 5 p.m.
game.
East Lincoln scored two
long touchdowns in the
third quarter to take a 14-0
lead.
KM'’s Sharif Burris recov-
ered a fumble in the fourth
quarter. Tyvegas Goode
took a pitch on a receiver
reverse and threw a pass to
Trey McCorkle who ram-
bled 35 yards to the East
Lincoln there. Antwain Ross
ran it in from there for the
Patriots’ only score.
Kings Mountain attempt-
ed an onsides kick, but East
Lincoln recovered it and ran
the clock out.
“We saw a lot of improve-
ment over our first two
games,” Coach Deaton said,
“but they were a lot bigger
and faster than us and we
were really out-manned.
We're improving, but we're
just a lot smaller than a lot
of the teams we're playing.”
Kings Mountain has only
one returning starter and six
other players that played on
‘last year’s team, which won
the Division title.
“The guys are getting a lot
of playing time and gaining
experience,” Deaton said.
“We're improving but our
schedule’s getting tougher.
If we cut down on our mis-
takes and penalties maybe
we can win some.”
Penalties stopped two
potential scoring drives by
the Patriots, and two others
ended in dropped passes.
“Our quarterback, Darrick
Marable, did a good job and
threw the ball well,” Deaton
said. “We just couldn't pull
the ball in. We had a hard
time running the ball on
- them. They had some big
linebackers that could
move, and our kids were
