At 9 a.m. one of our planes crashed into one of the towers. Then at 9:30 a.m. a second plane thundered through the sec- ond tower. This sent total shock and chaos throughout what hours before had been a relaxed and humble world. As the rubble came to a fall and reality of the catas- trophe sank in, we had lost more than three thousand Americans, firefighters, policemen, paramedics, doc- tors, nurses, military troops, and even civilians who reached to the aide of oth- ers. One that stands out in my mind is a small boy around the age of 12 or 13 who rushed to help with the victims. All that he must have seen had to have been devastating. Some of the ideas also surfaced when I had a recent crying jag. There are a couple of definitions for the word potpourri. One type of potpourri is that smelling stuff made of dried bits of flowers some folk fill jars with and place around their home. I know a house that has so much potpourri in it that when you walk in the door your eyes water and It’s time to put 9-11 behind us and move on September 11 of this year has now come and gone and hopefully all people have had a time to reflect on last year’s horrible attacks. "A lot of different organizations held observances for people to remember. Now it’s time to move on. Let's put this in the history books and let others taking classes discuss the attacks. Let's let it sit with people’s newspaper collections. The attack should be thought of whenever one gets the urge to go through the clippings of that days ue ar « w= Ben Ledbetter Staff Writer RR cr PR re vm 1 THPErg gy £1 M 1 IID Eda mane. | one Fo arenes Bilis J | Youths Tne word popes alo mes, Si FLUEN as him. i J3iUn% Rand around; I'nmt'sure that was{pbserved and remembered as DL Dah or Tiare 14 Soa Rat sus. The other day I saw a lady in a car on I-85 that must have had a Sperry automatic pilot directional vectoring device installed. Why did I think this was so? Because the silver SUV she was sitting in was speeding down the road at 80 miles per hour right on the bumper of another car as she steadied the vanity mirror with on hand and applied war paints with the other. Here's another bit of potpourri. Have you ever watched any of those shows on TV that tour mansions and such or show the lifestyles of the "rich and famous?" There seems to be a glut of them. I was struck the other day by the fact that not everyone lives in a mansion, has a $50,000 car, or dines daily at a five-star restaurant. What do poor folks think when they see these shows? How can they explain to their kids the fact that money is not every- thing? I wonder. Barbecue is my next bit of potpourri. Having sampled Q in a number of locations in both North and South Carolina, I am convinced that the further west you go, the worse the stuff is. On a recent mountain trip, my wife and I stopped at a bbq place in the hills. What came out on my plate looked like a stomped possum. There was two types of Mystery Sauce on the table. One resembled watery ketchup laced with turpentine, the other a concoction of mashed up tomatoes and some type of oil. When we got back home, I “did not let many days pass before we went to a decent Gaston County bbq place for something fittin' to eat. + My last chunk of potpourri is about rain. Wasn't the recent rain lovely? There is no doubt a connection between the soothing sound rain makes as it hits a tin roof and our deepest inner self. will benefit the Kings Mountain Boys Club. War, what's war, I know you all must say? More blood shed, more lives lost. Is that the road to take? Revenge is sweet, that’s what most think will make things okay. Voters in Cleveland County made their choice for sher- iff known when they cast their ballots for Raymond : Hamrick and Richard Hill. Although both will advance to the general election in November, Hamrick, a democrat, had the most interesting race. As the first precinct totals were coming in, Hamrick was ahead, and the trend continued throughout the night. Only a handful of precincts went to incumbent Dan Crawford, who served two terms as the chief law enforce- ment officer for the county. A recent controversy about an inmate who died while at the jail may have skewed the election. It may not have, also. Frankly, that will never be determined unless a scientific poll is conducted to see if that was the case.
