September 26, 200 Shriners BBQ was big success The White Plains Shrine Club of Kings Mountain held its annual fall barbecue Saturday. All proceeds go to Shriners hospitals. Music was presented by Aaron and Brian Clark, Bob Simpson and Jimmy Bolin. Winners of prizes were Teresa Gantt of Lawndale, 20” TV; Don Lee of Kings Mountain, DVD player; and John Murphy of Kings Mountain, a set of tires. Special guest was four- month-old Alex Jones of Mooresboro, who is a patient at the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, SC. Clover Art Series inaugural season Clover School District Auditorium will open the Performing Art Series inau- gural season Thursday, October 3 at 8 p.m. with a concert by classical pianist Emile Pandolfi. This is the first of five per- formances in the CSDA Performing Arts Series. Season tickets are $40. Individual tickets for this event are $15. All seats are reserved. Over 28,000 people are expected to attend. The event will include dis- plays on antique gasoline and kerosene engines, trac- tors, steam engines and shingle sawing. The high- light of the show is a fully restored 1900 sing-e-stand Continental Cotton Gin. every two hours. There will Admission and parking are free. Short deployed to Mediterranean Navy Airman Edward S. Short, son of Kathy D. Blanton of Bessemer City and Preston E. Short of Mooresville, formerly of Kings Mountain, is halfway through a six-month deploy- ment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the USS George Washington, home ported in Norfolk, Va. . Short is one of more than 10,000 Atlantic Fleet Sailors and Marines aboard the ships of the USs George ‘Washington Carrier Battle Group and USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group. During the first half of the deployment Short’s ship vis- ited the ports of Crete, Greece and Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates. The crew had the opportunity to shop, sightsee and enjoy local culture and cuisine. Short joined the Navy in June 2001. Croft, a 2001 gradu- ate of Bessemer City High School, recently departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned. to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, based in Norfolk, VA. Croft is one of more than 4,000 Atlantic Fleet sailors and Marines aboard the ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group. USS Nassau supports amphibious operations using Landing Craft Air Cushions (LCACs), which are specially-designed - Hovercraft that travel above land and sea surfaces and deliver vehicles and equip- ment. The ship also has con- ventional landing craft and helicopters embarked, and is equipped with medical facil- ities staffed by Navy doc- tors, dentists, nurses and corpsmen. The yearbooks for 2002-2003 were members present. Ben Sabetti earns rank of Eagle Scout Ben Sabetti received the rank of Eagle Scout in a Court of Honor ceremony. Sunday, August 18 at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain. Sabetti is a member of Boy Scout Troop 92 at First Baptist Church. Scoutmaster Dennis Bolin conducted the ceremony. Aaron Allen gave the Charge to the Eagle, and Larry Hamrick Jr. gave the Challenge to the Eagle. Butch Kerns presented the “Voice of the Eagle.” Sabetti was pinned by his mother before 124 Scouts, friends and family. Sabetti led Scouts from his troop in a two-day water safety /CPR program to ful- fill his requirements for Eagle Scout. Sixteen preschoolers from area churches were participants in the water safety program.
