The win officially clinched a State playoff berth for the Mountaineers and improved their record to 3-3 in the Southwestern Foothills 3A and 3-6 overall. For awhile it looked like the two teams would settle for an old-fashioned smash mouth, wallow-in-the-mud contest. On their first two possessions, neither team could get anything accom- plished and went 3-and-out. But facing third and six on their third possession, the Mountaineers split jun- ior wide receiver Derrick Smith to the right side of the field. Quarterback Chris Jolly hit him with a 5-yard slant pass, Smith made a couple outstanding athletic moves around Indian defenders and raced 66 yards to the one yard line to set up a one-yard plunge up See Win, 2B GARY STEWART / HERALD Kings Mountain running back Aquino Simmons (40) on a big run in Friday’s win over St. Stephens Friday at Gamble Stadium. The Mountaineers closed out Southwestern Foothills Conference play Friday at Hickory with a chance to nail down third place. The Kings Mountain Herald October 31, 2002 MOVING ON UP Mountaineers can tinish in third place with win at Hickory By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Kings Mountain's Mountaineers officially clinched a State 3A playoff berth with their 42-7 victory over St. Stephens Friday night at John Gamble Stadium. The victory means the Mountaineers can finish no lower than fourth place in the Southwestern Foothills 3A, and with five SWEH teams going to the playoffs under the new “sub-division” format Dave Farquharson’s team is in despite what hap- pens the rest of the year.
