Town and Country Garden Club met October 10 at the home of Carolyn Cobb. Mrs. Cobb served a lovely snack plate to the members present. Members read the Club Collect and Arlene Barrett, president, called the busi- ness meeting to order. The minutes were read and accepted as information. Susan Gibson gave the trea- surer’s report. The fall festival was dis- cussed. Ginger Hall gave a pro- gram on “The Care of Trees and Shrubs.” Since trees and shrubs add beauty to lawns, healthy and vigorous plants should be maintained. It is important to fertilize near trees since they produce two Town and Country Garden Club meets feet or more of growth each year. 8-8-8 is a complete fer- tilizer for trees. Azaleas need an applica- tion in early spring, then again in June and September. An ideal soil Ph is 5.6. Shrubs should be pruned in early spring and some can be pruned moderately throughout the year. Mulch around plants will aid in maintaining moisture and keeping weeds from grow- ing. If a plant has yellow leaves, it could be a sign that it needs nitrogen. Roses should be sprayed every 7 to 10 days for dis- ease control. The fall is a good time to aerate and ‘prune plants. Magnolia Garden Club has meeting The Magnolia Garden Club met with Bess Phifer for its October 22 meeting. Eleven members were pres- ent. . A refreshment plate con- sisting of sausage biscuit, apricot brad, grapes and pecan tarts were served. Edie Bridges, president, called the meeting to order with the saying of the Club Collect. Old and new busi- ness was discussed. Appreciation was expressed to all who helped with the recent fall festival. Teresa Ruppe gave an interesting program on “Bulbs.” She noted that | bulbs need goo drainage. Good bulbs should be selected and planted at the proper depth. Water, mulch and fertilizer are important. Bulbs do better if they are removed from the ground, cleaned and stored after the foliage has dried. Store in a cool, dry place. Arrangements were done by maxine Bennett and Bess Phifer. Both arrangements were done in black contain- ers with beautiful gold, yel- low and orange colors with a “Halloween Delight” theme. Molly Savage was wel- comed as a new member. Mrs. Goforth hosts The Thursday Afternoon Book Club met at the home of Pam Goforth on October 24. During the social, Pam served a delicious dessert plate which featured Southern Living’s pecan pie, pickle sandwiches, cheese straws, grapes, and assorted Halloween candies. Mulled cider completed the dessert. Marion Thomasson pre- sented the program after the reading of the Collect. >She introduced Catherine Lopez, who is a park ranger with Kings Mountain National Military park. Lopez pre- sented the group with many interesting facts about the park. Extensive renovations are taking place at the park; this means that the museum will be closed for several months. The visitor's center will also be closed for several months. DAR dedicates marker at Col. Hambright’s grave A service for the dedica- tion of a DAR marker for the grave of Colonel Frederick Hambright was held Sunday, oct. 13 at the old Shiloh Church Cemetery near Grover. Sixty-five per- sons attended. The processional was led by Nancy Poston, a Hambright descendant and member of Flint Hills Chapter NSDAR. She car- ried the U.S. flag. Next came Kay Hambright, Ann Thompson, Chaplain Margaret Ledford, and District IT Director Betty Masters, all members of the Colonel Hambright Chapter. Masters gave the Regents :} ge and leg the pled 1 g a BS oo, “We Standing on Holy Ground,” and Masters and Ledford led the DAR ritual. Ellen Hinson, President of the NC Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, was recognized. She displayed “an afghan that had been designed by Eudora Anne Barber Ratcliffe of Pinehurst and sold to the Hambright descendants. Hinson reported that Ratcliffe received a national award for her acquisition of a SC historical marker for Colonel Hambright and in recognition of outstanding contribution to the advance- ment of the society. She received an award from the NC State Society in recogni- tion of the manuscript of Colonel Hambright. Ratcliffe has also been rec- ognized statewide for her biography of and securing a roadside marker for Colonel Hambright in 2000 and a marker for the old Shiloh Church Cemetery in 2001, where several Revolutionary War soldiers are buried. She also was instrumental in securing the DAR grave marker for Colonel Hambright. She placed a rose on the grave from the Colonel Frederick Hambright Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
