Glenn eliminates Mounties in wild opening round game By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Kings Mountain's Mountaineers took a lot of offense with them to Kernersville Glenn for the first round of the State 3AA | playoffs Friday night, But Glenn had more...Shawn Moore that is. Moore, a 190-pound soph- omore tailback, ran over, around and through the Kings Mountain defense for a season high 313 yards in 31 carries to lead the Bobcats to a 40-28 victory and a sec- ond round matchup this week against Gastonia Ashbrook, a 48-20 winner over Weddington. Offense was certainly the name of the game as neither team’s defense was very successful in stopping the other’s high-scoring attack. Kings Mountain, which went into the game with a 4- 7 record and the #13 seed, had early leads of 7-0 and 14-7 before Glenn built a 28- 14 lead with 5:07 left in the Ji ; nd \ Noet Early Deadlines Due to the Thanksgiving holiday our papers will have early deadlines for advertisements needing to run in next week's paper. But a spectacular 67-yard sideline scoring strike from quarterback Chris Jolly to wide receiver Derrick Smith 16 seconds later, pulled the Mountaineers to within 28- 21, and the Mountaineers almost recovered the ensu- ing kickoff inside the Glenn one-yard line which would have given them a golden opportunity to win the game. Following Smith's score, the Mounties attempted an onside kick but Glenn was penalized for being offside. On the next kick, the Mounties elected to try to place the ball over the head of Moore, who was Glenn's back receiver at the 15, and were successful. Jamarl Barrino was running full speed downfield in an attempt to recover the ball before it went into the end zone, and slid into the end zone as he recovered it. At first, one official signalled touchdown, which is not possible for a kicking team under high school rules; and after a brief conversation the officials ruled the ball had broken the plane of the end zone and was thus a touch- back, giving Glenn the ball on the 20. It took the Bobcats only four plays to cover the 80 yards, with Moore circling left end and cutting against the grain for a 28-yard meet touchdown that put the Bobcats ahead 34-21. The Mountaineers methodically worked the ball downfield with sideline passes, and Barrino caught a deflected pass and turned it into a 40-yard scoring play that:brought the'Mounties)| within 34-28.! conic i HiH The Mountaineers attempted an onside kick, and actually recovered it but it did not go the required 10 yards before the Mountaineers touched it. Thus, Glenn took possession at the KM 48 and on the sec- ond play Moore rambled 40 yards for the clinching touchdown. The Mountaineers were able to use the clock to work the ball down to the Glenn 15 yard line, but a fourth down pass fell incomplete in the end zone as time expired. The game started out as it ended - with a flurry of points. Only in the third quarter did the two teams fail to light up the score- board. Kings Mountain took a 7-0 lead by driving the opening kickoff right downfield to score on a 9-yard pass from Jolly to Derrick Smith. Glenn answered with a four-yard run by Moore to tie the score at 7. Even though there was no scoring, Glenn ate up much of the clock in the third quarter and took a 28-14 lead with 10:59 to go in the game on a one-yard run by Moore. The Bobcats, who improved to 10-2 overall, scored on six of their nine possessions. They lost one fumble, were stopped once by the Mounties at the 16 yard line, and punted once. The Mountaineers weren't very successful running the ball against Glenn's 8-man front. They managed only 150 yards on the ground, but Jolly hit on 12 of 22 passes for 213 yards to top the 1,000 yard mark for the season. He finished the year with 73-0f-155 passes for 1,177 yards and 13 touch- downs. He's only the fourth passer in the 80-year history of KMHS football to pass for over 1,000 yards in a single season. Lance McClain threw for 1,038 yards in 1996, and Anthony Ash threw for 1,006 in 1997 and 1,274 in 1998. WL a fi Ee it 7 oh ’ 1 J i 1 3 5 i ——— SR ERR Ra GEERTSEE RE RRR Ry Ion Tc fon ct eA
