Making a difference
Family Worship Center, Peoples Baptist to feed 400 families this Christmas
BY ABIGAIL WOLFORD
Staff Writer
The Family Worship Center and
Peoples Baptist Church are team-
ing up to make a difference in the
community this Christmas season.
The congregations of each church
have given the money to help feed
almost 400 families in the commu-
nity. The project is called, “Merry
Christmas, Kings Mountain!”
“The vision was born through a
friendship of mine with the presi-
dent of Operation Compassion,”
said Rev. Roger Woodard of the
Family Worship Center.
Operation Compassion is an
organization that has served peo-
ple on the ground after 9/11, dur-
ing Hurricane Floyd, and in the
Navajo nation in the southwestern
United States. The organization is
providing the semi-truck full of
food for the Merry Christmas,
Kings Mountain! project.

Woodard said he first became
involved with the organization
during a mission trip to the Navajo
nation during the summer. He
said he really felt called to help
those people, and when he came
home, he decided to help his own
people as well. He said he men-
tioned the idea of helping the peo-
ple of Kings Mountain to his
friend, Rev. John Houze, one of the
men he prays with each week.
“We've been praying together for
over five years,” he said.
Houze liked the idea, so the two
of them decided to have their
churches each donate half of the
money to Operation Compassion
in order to purchase the food. The
idea worked, and the semi-truck
full of food is on the way.
Approximately 386 families will
benefit from the food.
Right now, the Merry Christmas,
Kings Mountain! project does not
need donations. However, Houze
Speaker will be Ian Stamp, MD, and
there will be a panel to answer ques-
tions from the audience.
Refreshments will be served.

encourages those interested in
donating food to contact the Crisis
Ministry Center in Kings
Mountain.
“We'd like people who have food
to give, to give it to the Crisis
Ministry center,” he said.
The project is not without needs,
however. Houze said that people
are needed on December 12 and 13
to unload the semi-truck and box
up the food, so that the distribu-
tion runs smoothly on December
14. Also they need help identify-
ing the families who need the food.
“Our main needs right now are
man-power to pack the boxes and
help identifying families. We want
to work through the churches and
find families with bonafide need.
If the need is there, we want to
help,” said Woodard.

“There are no restrictions on who
can get the benefit,” said Woodard.
The only requirement to receive
a box of food is bonafide need, he
said. “We'll give it to whomever
will need it to wherever it will go,”
he said. :
“It’s not limited to Kings
Mountain,” said Houze. “We want
to meet the needs of the people,
wherever they are.”
Along with the food, the semi
will be bringing enough stocking
stuffers for 1000 kids, as well as a
few articles of clothing and groom-
ing supplies. The semi will also
contain a few new bicycles which
will be given out through a draw-

food is distributed.
The food will be distributed at a
warehouse, donated by Bobby
Bridges for a one-time use.
Woodard hopes that the ministry
that will begin on December 14
will become an ongoing ministry
that will be able to help a lot of
people. Before this can happen,
however, the ministry needs a
warehouse to work from perma-
nently. While currently without a
headquarters, the Kings Mountain
ministry already has a name,
Earthen Vessels.
“We want to be an ongoing dis-
tribution point for people in need,”
said Woodard.
Besides the people of the two
churches, community leaders will
also be assisting in the effort on
December 14, including Mayor
Rick Murphrey and City Manager
Jimmy Maney, said Woodard.
Everyone is welcome and encour-
aged to come and help, he said.
