‘Mounties sweep
Chargers, host
R-SC Friday
After two tough post-holi-
day games on the road,
Kings Mountain High's bas-
ketball teams will be happy
to get back into the friendly
confines of Donald L. Parker
Gymnasium for a spell.
Although it wasn’t easy,
the Mountaineers managed
to sweep Crest Tuesday
night in Boiling Springs -
with the girls winning 49-43
and the boys 53-46 - after
splitting with Burns last
Friday in Lawndale.
Kings Mountain girls
carry a 2-1 Southwestern
Foothills and 7-5 overall
mark into Friday’s home
game with R-S Central. The
boys are 2-1 in the SWFH
and 10-2 overall, but Coach
Danny McDowell has not
been pleased with the way
his team has performed
since Christmas.
Kings Mountain remains
at home next Tuesday to
face St. Stephens before clos-
ing out their first round of
conference play on January
17 at Hickory. Both Hickory
teams are the pre-season
choice to win the SWFH.

at intermission and 35-30
going into the fourth quar-
ter.
But several of the KM
ladies saved some of their
best basketball for the last
quarter. Brittany Dee scored
five of her seven points,
including a 3-point field
goal, in the final eight min-
utes. Shonda Cole, who led
the Mountaineers with 21
points, was drawing double-
and triple-teaming from the
Crest defense, but Candace
Springs scored five of her 11
points and Danielle Gill hit
six of her eight in the final
chapter.
“The girls really wanted
to win this game,” said KM
Coach Kevin Moss. “They
played hard the entire game
and just took over in the
fourth quarter.”
In addition to her 21
points, Cole grabbed 14
rebounds and blocked five
shots.
Guard Chasidy Petty
scored 20 points, and for-
ward Shahiddah Petty
added 11 for the Lady
Chargers.
Kings Mountain’s boys
led most of the game but the
Mountaineers could never
pull away from the
Chargers, who have won
only one game in 12 starts
this year.
KM led 16-8 at the quarter
: break, 23-21 at halftime, and
37-36 going into the fourth
quarter.
Crest was forced to foul in
the final minute of the
game, and the Mountaineers
clinched the win at the foul
line.
Dominique Odems led the
Mountaineers with 15 points
and Deshaun Young added
12. Gene Proctor led Crest
with 14 and Travis Lee
added 10.

GARY STEWART / HERALD
Derrick Smith (20) drives the lane for Kings Mountain's Mountaineers. The
Mountaineers return home Friday night for a Southwestern Foothills
Conference game with R-S Central.
Girls win, boys lose
Friday night at Burns
Shonda Cole scored off an inbounds
pass with two seconds left to give
Kings Mountain's girls a 50-48 victory
over Burns in a Southwestern Foothills
Conference game Friday night in
Lawndale.
Kings Mountain's boys had their
nine-game winning streak snapped in
the nightcap, 66-42.
The Lady Bulldogs came from seven
points down in the final minute to tie
the game at 48-all with six seconds left.
A 3-pointer by Markita Lee brought
the Bulldogs to within two points, and
Tierra Smith's layup tied the game.
After Cole’s shot put the Lady"
Mountaineers ahead, Burns hurried
the ball down court but missed a 3-
pointer at the buzzer.
The Lady Mountaineers built a 30-
17 lead in the first half, but Burns took
advantage of free throw opportunities
to stay in the game.. Burns outscored
the Mounties 14-4 in the third period
to trail by only 34-31 going into the
final eight minutes.
For the game, the Lady Bulldogs hit .
13 of 20 free throws and KM was only
5-for-6, including 4-of-5 in the fourth
quarter.
Candace Spring's 21 points led the
Mountaineers, who improved to 1-1 in
the SWFH and 6-5 overall. Cole was
the only other double-digit scorer with
14. Tierra Smith had 14 for Burns,
which'fell to 0-1 in the SWFH and 2-8
overall.
“This was a hundred percent team
win,” said Coach Kevin Moss of the
Mountaineers. “Every player on the
team played a big part in this win.
Hopefully we can get back on a win-
ning streak. We need to play more con-
sistent in order to make a playoff run.
Going back and forth winning and los-
ing will not make the playoffs.”

Poor shooting and heavy legs
plagued the Mountaineers all night
long in the nightcap, and Burns hand-
ed them one of their toughest losses in
the past two seasons.
The Bulldogs grabbed the lead and
never let up in winning their first con-
ference game and dropping the
Mounties to 1-1 in the SWFH and 9-2
overall. Burns led 19-13 after the first
quarter, 35-24 at the half and 47-35
going into the fourth quarter.
Kings Mountain managed to cut the.
margin to 10 points one time in the
fourth quarter, but couldn’t get any
. closer.
Big Chris Gash led the way for Eddy
Taylor’s Bulldogs with 20 points,
including his 1,000th career point. Josh
Briscoe added 13.
Guards Dashawn Young and Derrick
Smith led the Mountaineers with 11
points each, but not a single reserve
scored for the Mountaineers who had
been getting balanced scoring from all
of its players.
The Mountaineers managed only 29
percent shooting from the foul line, 29
percent from 2-point range and 19 per-
cent for 3-point range.
“We were a step slow all night,” said
Coach Danny McDowell. “We made
them look like All-Americans. We had
no legs. I knew we'd be rusty, but not
that bad. We've just got to reload and
get back to doing the things we need
to do to be successful.”

Coaching
changes
in making
With the holidays over we should be
hearing soon about new coaching
appointments in the high school foot-
* ball ranks.
A number of head coaching posi-
tions became
vacant after the
recently-complet-
Two of the
higher-profile
jobs are in
Gaffney, SC and
Hickory.
Gaffney’s long-
time head coach
Joe Montgomery
resigned after his Gary Stewart
third straight los- ~~ Editor
RET
ing season.
According to
recent reports in the Gaffney Ledger,
some of South Carolina’s top coaches
showed interest in the job but many of
them have taken their names out of
consideration.
Montgomery's replacement could be
named later this week.
Montgomery had come under heavy
fire from some school administrators
last year and waited until the final day
before South Carolina’s deadline to
sign his 2002-03 contract.
Hickory’s longtime head coach,
David Elder, either resigned from his
duties or was fired, according to
whom you want to believe.
According to a Hickory newspaper,
Elder, who averaged nine wins a year
and won a State championship during
his tenure, and who last week posted
his 400th victory as the Red
Tornadoes’ girls basketball coach, says
he was fired. The Hickory principal
says he resigned.
Elder admitted that in a discussion
with the principal two years ago he
said he intended to get out of football
in a few years. The principal apparent-
ly took the word “few” to mean “two”
and after the season announced
Elder’s resignation and appointed
assistant coach John Worley as head
coach.
An interesting twist to this story is
that the action came after the Hickory
branch of the NAACP reportedly
wrote the principal a letter. A
spokesman for the NAACP told the
Hickory newspaper that it wrote a let-
ter to the principal but it didn’t con-
tain any reference to the athletic pro-
gram.
Two other Catawba County schools -
Fred T. Foard and St. Stephens - are
also looking for head football coaches.
Jon Jarman resigned as coach at St.
Stephens after three years on the job,
and Charlie Lloyd was fired after his
second straight losing season at Foard.
As of this writing neither of those
vacancies has been filled.
Fred Davis, who developed quite a
rivalry with nearby Crest over the past
several seasons, resigned as Anson
County's coach to focus on being a
full-time athletic director. The head
jobs are also open at Parkwood, Sun
Valley and Asheville Erwin.
The rumor mill has it that Mike
Carter is retiring after several success-
ful years at Mooresville. If so he'll be
sorely missed by the Blue Devil faith-
ful because he turned that program
into one of the best in North Carolina.

New Year’s tourney
Stoney Jackson, Sylvia Neisler, Toney Wells and Mike
Deninger combined for a 15-under-par 57 to win the New
Year’s Day Captain's Choice Golf Tournament at Kings
Mountain Country Club.
John Gamble, Rich Sari, Jim Champion and Jerry Ross fin-
ished second with a 58.
Gerald Putnam, Pat Frazier, Ken Cloninger and Tony
West finished third with a 59.
Closest to the pin winners on par 3 holes were Dennis
Hicks, Sylvia Neisler, and Gerald Putnam,
