New
United States Sen. John
Edwards on Monday echoed
the words of Martin Luther
King, Jr. on the national
holiday to commemorate his
memory and called on
Southerners to continue to
lead the movement for civil
rights.
At a gathering of commu-
nity and religious leaders in
the Research Triangle Park
and later in Winston-
Salem, Edwards said Dr.
King and other courageous
Southern leaders had
changed America.
“Even in the darkest days,
countless Southerners stood
as profiles in courage in the
face of withering opposi-
tion,” Edwards said. “For |
every George Wallace, we
had a Terry Sanford.”
The memory of Dr. King,
Edwards added, is an
inspiration today.
“As Southerners, all of us
have a special responsibility
to lead on civil rights not
only because we know
America’s tragic and terrible
history when it comes to
race, but because we have
led the way in breaking free
from that history,” he said.
Edwards questioned
President George
W. Bush's recent legal attack
on efforts to expand oppor-
tunities in higher education.
“I am very disappointed
that the President has
decided to join the fight
against affirmative action at
the University of Michigan.”
he said. “We should support
efforts that increase diversity
and put an end to systems
like legacy admissions that
give special preference to the
most advantaged at the
expense of diversity.”
He also said more needs to
be done to ensure voting
rights are enforced for all
Americans, to make certain
that everyone in the country .
January 22 & 23, 2003
Edwards calls on Southerners
to lead the civil rights movement
has an equal chance to
compete in the workplace |
and to end the lingering
effects of discrimination in
health care and public
education.
“We have laws guarantee-
ing equal opportunity. Now
we have to address the
underlying economic
conditions that still result in
an average African-Ameri-
can income that is barely
half that of whites,” he said.
“We have laws prohibiting
segregation in public educa-
tion. Now we have to do
something about a school
system that is becoming
increasingly re-segregated,
leaving too many minority
children the victims of
inadequate education
funding, inferior schools and
indifference,” added
Edwards.
“We have come far,” he
concluded, “but we have far
to go.”
Easley urges North Carolinians
to serve as mentors to students
Gov. Mike Easley recently
signed a proclamation
officially designating the
month of January as Na-
tional Mentoring Month.
The national initiative is a
public-private effort to
recruit volunteer mentors for
young people who are at-
risk of failure in school.
“We are fortunate in this
state to have thousands of
individuals who give their
time to help make the lives
of our children better,” said
Easley. “But we need thou-
sands more to join our
efforts so that every child
who needs a mentor gets
that extra help and personal
attention they need to
succeed. ;
Research has shown that
mentoring has a definitive
positive impact on young
people by increasing atten-
dance at school, improving
rates of high-school gradua-
tion and college attendance,
while decreasing involve-
ment with drugs, alcohol,
and violent behaviors,
according to Easley.
“During this month, I want
North Carolinians to con-
sider mentoring a child,”
said Easley.
“In North Carolina, more
than 40,000 people volunteer

each week to mentor or tutor
our children,” added Easley.
“These efforts are helping us
keep kids in school, increase
attendance, reduce inappro-
priate behavior and help our
children have a brighter
future.”
During the month of
January, North Carolina will
have a statewide media
campaign titled “Who
Mentored You” with public
service announcements,
print media and a statewide
training event for mentoring
organizations in Charlotte.
In numerous states and
cities across the country,
_ leading non-profit organiza-
_ tions have joined together
with government agencies
and media companies to
support the campaign.
Top Hollywood stars,
political leaders, athletes,
and journalists are partici-
pating including Tom
Brokaw, Deepak Chopra,
Walter Cronkite, Sen. John
McCain, Edward James
Olmos, General Colin
Powell, Bill Russell, Tim
Russert, Martin Sheen and
Mike Wallace. The White
House is supporting the
effort through the
President's USA Freedom
Corps initiative.
