Page 2A OBITUARIES The Kings Mountain Herald = March 6, 2003 ALMA SELLERS KINGS MOUNTAIN - Alma Bell Sellers, 84, 101 Water Oak Street, died March 3, 2003 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daugh- ter of the late Marcus L. and Elizabeth Jackson Bell and wife of the late George William Sellers. She was also preceded in death by her sis- ter, Letha Stewart. She was a member of Dixon Presbyterian Church, where she served as Elder and former church choir member and pianist. She was retired from Margrace Mill. She is survived by her sons, Donald Sellers and wife Freda, George W. Sellers Jr. and wife Karen, and Bill Sellers and wife Brenda, all of Kings Mountain; daughter, Doris S. Cloninger and husband Kenneth of Kings Mountain; nine grandchildren, Adam Sellers of Kings Mountain, Aaron Sellers of Boone, Sherri Fort and husband Hilton of Louisville, KY, Donald Sellers Jr. and wife Sherry of Kings Mountain, Leslie Ramsey and husband Rev. Doug Ramsey of Blacksburg, SC, Jeff Cloninger and wife Lorri of Kings Mountain, Mark Cloninger of Raleigh, Penny Mertz and husband Johnny + of Kings Mountain, and Rodney Sellers and wife Beth of Kings Mountain; 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. The funeral was conduct- ed by the Revs. Doug Ramsey and Alan Sinclair at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dixon Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandpar- ents, Sam and Irene Smith; maternal grandpar- ents, Henry _ SS and Pearl Padgett; and , brother-in-law, Charles Bell. He was a member of Long Branch First Baptist Church of Grover, where he served on the Usher Board and Trustee Board. He was one of the original members of the Double Deuce softball team which was established in 1992. He was a 1981 grad- uate of Crest High School and served three years in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Angela B. Smith of the home; sons, Courtney Franklin Smith and Derrick Jamaal Smith of the home; father, Andrew Smith of Shelby; mother, Henrean P. Lockhart and husband Ben of Kings Mountain; brothers, Danny Smith of Gastonia, Wayne Smith and Jacqueline of Kings Mountain, Kevin Smith of Gastonia, and Ty Vin McSwain of Shelby; sister, Sandra Wilson and Kenneth of Shelby; mother- in-law and father-in-law, Rev. Rebecca and Roy Bell Jr., brothers-in-law Irvin Bell and Nette, Rev. Kenny Bell and Nadine, and Vernon Bell and Josie, sister-in-law, Rachel Reid and Herbert, all of Grover; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The funeral was conduct- ed by the Revs. William Thompson and Larry H. Dixon at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter Baptist Church, Grover. A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Mae Phillips Grigg and wife of the late John G. Hill. She was also predeceased by her brothers Jerry Grigg and Jackie Grigg, and sister Aleen Buchanan. She was a homemaker. BETTY BROOKS BOILING SPRINGS - Betty Regina Blanton Brooks, 77, 2043 Holly Hill Road, died March 2, 2003 at her home. A native of Cherokee County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Dwight L. and Lucille Sarratt Blanton. She was also prede- ceased by her brother, Max Dean Blanton. She was retired from Cleveland county School Food Service. She worked for many years in the Boiling Springs Elementary School cafeteria. She was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church and was a long time volunteer for L.I.V.E. and Crawley Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Carl “Bud” Brooks of the home; sons, John Carlton Brooks and wife Cindy and Joseph Dwight Brooks and wife Amy, all of Boiling Springs; daughter, Margretta Ann McKee and husband Harry of Boiling Springs; brothers, Farchell Blanton and wife Juanita of Kings Mountain and Alton A. A native of Middlesex, he was the son of the late W.P. and Elizabeth Smith Bullock. He was also preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. He was a member of the Seaboard Lions Club for 50 years and was a Mason and member of the American Legion for over 50 years. He served in the U.S Navy dur- ing World War II as a Seabee in the Pacific. He was retired owner-operator of Bullock Brothers of Seaboard, NC. He was also predeceased by his son, Tommy Taylor, and sister Lois Peeler. He served in the U.S. Army in World War IT and was a former employee of Rhyne’s Dairy. He was a charter member of the Kings Mountain Saddle Club. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Cudd Taylor; son, Larry Taylor and wife Betty of Bessemer City; daughters, Linda T. A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late Newman Thomas Lynn and Trassie Flume Lynn. He was also preceded in death by his sisters and brothers, Macie Lynn Champion, Anniebell Lynn Huffstickler and John Martin Lynn. He was a member of Independent Baptist Tabernacle. He was an ordained deacon for over 40 years. He was retired from Southern Gear. Wes Westmoreland was elected chairman, Kathy Livsie vice-chair, Billy Estes secretary, and Gaines Washburn treasurer. Westmoreland served as chairman for the past year and outlined goals for 2003. “We are the party of fiscal responsibility; the party peo- ple look to for leadership in’ Raleigh and Washington as well as Cleveland County,” he said. “The Republic Party is larger and stronger than it has ever been in Cleveland County, and continues to grow. My goal is to involve more people in the regular meetings of the party - to increase communication with our base in Cleveland County.” The party agreed to change the regular meeting day to the second Monday of each month.
