On Friday, Grover
Elementary School students
finished their celebration of
black history month by
attending an assembly in
honor of the month. The
assembly featured Kings
Mountain High School
drama teacher Betsy Wells’
third-period theater stu-
dents.
At the beginning of the
program, Joyce Harrington-
Pressley, a fourth-grade
teacher, played “Lift Every
Voice and Sing” for the stu-
dents before having two stu-
dents read their “I Am
Proud of My Heritage
Because” essays. One stu-
dent read about his Irish
heritage, while the other
read about his African-
American heritage.
Then the high school the-
ater class took over the
assembly. Students danced
and lip-synced to popular
songs by Aretha Franklin,
Tina Turner, and the
Temptations. They also had
games for the kids, which
featured famous African-
Americans, like Will Smith,
Michael Jordan, and Halle
Berry. The “Joy of Life”
singers performed two
songs a capella, using only
stomping to keep the
rhythm.
Students read facts about
famous African-Americans
in history, like Jesse Owens
and Harriet Tubman.
Harrington-Pressley, who
organized the assembly, said
she was very pleased with
the way it went. The stu-
dents had been spending
time studying famous
African-Americans all week
in class.

now,” she said. “It went so
well.”
Wells said she has been
planning the presentation
with her students since right
before Christmas. The stu-
dents talked amongst them-
selves and decided what
they wanted to do during
the assembly. She said that
she had many students in
the class who are not black
but who participated in the
black history month assem-
bly. Too often the only peo-
ple who recognize black his-
tory month are those who
are black, she said. She said
the activity helped foster an
appreciation of black history
in her non-black students.
“I think it’s been very suc-
cessful,” she said.
