The Kings Mountain Herald Rachels also leaving KM football program By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Kings Mountain High lost its third assis- tant football coach in less than a week Tuesday when offensive coordinator Milton Rachels announced that he would not be returning this year. Rachels, who operates the Dairy Queen in Shelby, had been a non-teacher assistant for the Mountaineers since the late 1990s. He served as quarterback coach during the lat- ter part of Ron Massey's tenure here and was offensive coordinator /quarterback coach for three years under Dave Farquharson. Rachels was not available for comment. Coach Farquharson said he wasn’t sure if the position would be filled since it was a non-teaching position. “We just haven't crossed that bridge yet,” he said. “We'll tinker with it.” Farquharson indicated that he may call the offensive plays himself. “Milton felt more comfortable in our scheme calling the plays himself as opposed to being up top (on the pressbox),” : Farquharson said. “We tried him up top and’ me calling the plays but he felt more com- fortable on the sidelines. Our coordinating really came out of our meetings between myself, Coach (Mike) Willbanks, Coach (Jon) Fleisher and Coach Rachels. We came up with the offensive game plan for that week. “That was something everybody con- tributed to and helped that plan along each week. After our first year Milton said he felt’ more comfortable working on the sidelines with me than talking to me from up top. He did the work with our quarterbacks calling the plays and put someone else up top.” Farquharson said late Wednesday morn- ing that he had received four resumes for the assistant defensive coach position which will come about with the resignation of Tony Leigh. Three of the four applicants are from out of state. “Football coaches are hard to find,” Farquharson said April 10, 2003 Youth revival set at People’s Baptist Youth revival will be held April 22-24 at 7 p.m at The People’s Baptist Church, 1010 Groves Street, Kings Mountain.
