Page 2A OBITUARIES The Kings Mountain Herald April 17, 2003 PAUL LANCASTER KINGS MOUNTAIN - Paul A. Lancaster, 90, 107 Lancaster Drive, died April 8, 2003 at Summit Place after a short illness. A native of Union County, SC, he was the son of the late Wallace M. and Carrie Gallman Lancaster and hus- band of the late Martha Louise Jones Lancaster, who died in 1995. He was also preceded in death by his son, Hugh Lancaster, in 1996. He attended Union /West area schools and moved to Kings Mountain in 1954. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church for 49 years and taught the PALS Sunday School Class for 40 years. He was retired President and co-founder of Kings Mountain Mica Company, past-president of the North Carolina Mining Association, member and past chairman of the Carolina’s Section of the Society of Mining Engineers, member and past Master of Prudence Masonic Lodge A.EM. 139 at Jonesville, SC, and a York Rite Mason and Shriner. He is survived by his daughter, Bette Passamani of Iron River, MI; daughter-in- law, Helen Greenfield of Kings Mountain; brothers, Wallace Lancaster of Bishopville, SC, Dwight Lancaster of Irmo, SC and Maxie Lancaster of Pahrump, NV; grandchil- dren, David Lancaster of York, SC, Steven Lancaster of Kings Mountain, Chris Passamani of Lansing, MI, Tina Akin of Arlington, TX, and Mark Passamani of Cedar Park, TX; and eight great grandchildren. The funeral was conduct- ed by the Revs. David Blanton and Russell Fitts at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church. A graveside service with full Masonic rites was held at 4:30 p.m. at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church cemetery, Pauline, SC. Memorials may be made to Sulphur Springs Baptist Church, P.O. BRADFORD CRAIN FAYETTEVILLE, GA - Brad Crain, 33, died April 4, 2003 in Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta, GA following a massive heart attack. He was Vice- President of Cooper Lighting of Atlanta, GA. He was a graduate of [. Cherryville High School and Western Carolina University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi fraternity. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Fayetteville, Ga. He is the son of Janice Crowder Walters of Kings Mountain, and grandson of Ruth Crowder of Cherryville. He is also survived by his wife, Jennifer Fox Crain; daughters, Carly and Brooke Crain of the home; and uncles Dennis Crowder, Larry Crowder and Jimmy Crowder. The funeral was conduct- ed by the Rev. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daugh- ter of the late Preston Audie and Nettie Pearson Hawkins. She was also pre- ceded in death by her sis- ters, Ann Ruth Whiteside and Mildred Bumgarner, and brother J.B. Hawkins. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church. She worked in the banking industry with First Union National Bank for 20 years and with BB&T for eight years. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Don Bumgardner of Kings Mountain; sisters, Betty Crawford, Peggy Davis, and Myra Hagans and husband Tom, all of Kings Mountain, ‘Lois Ellis and husband Don of Grover, and Linda Tignor of Shelby; brother, Tommy Hawkins and wife Kay of Kings Mountain; sister-in- law, Bessie Bumgardner of Kings Mountain; brother-in- law Harvey Bumgardner of Raleigh; 11 nephews, 10 nieces, 12 great-nephews and seven great-nieces. DORIS LEFEVERS CLARKSVILLE, TN - Doris Estes Lefevers, 67, died April 14, 2003 at General Care Convalescent - Center. She was the daughter of the late Rollie M. and Martha Bell Lamb Estes.and wife of the late Ross “Red” Lefevers. She was also pre- ceded in death by her daughter, Martha Elizabeth Lefevers. PHILBECK SHELBY - J.D. McKinley Philbeck, 59, 330 West Lee Street, died April 13, 2003 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Hittie Pauline Melton Philbeck of Shelby and the late Johnny McKinley Philbeck. He was also pre- ceded in death by his broth- er, John Buren Philbeck, and sister Shirley Jean Philbeck. He played bass guitar for his family’s gospel singing group, The Philbeck Family, for over 30 years. He served 12 years on the Shelby Rescue Squad and was on the Board of Directors at #7 Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was a truck driver at Ruan Trucking Co. and was an active member of Redeemed Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he , played bass guitar, was a deacon and served on the building committee. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 39 years, Virginia Morgan Philbeck of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and James Justice, Bryan Hord, and Amy and Todd Melton, all of Shelby; grandchildren, Mindy Hoyle, Tiffany Hoyle, Vanessa Hoyle, Heather Melton and Dusty Melton, all of Shelby; sisters and their husbands, Laurine and Austin Ellis of Grover, Brenda and Paul Bridges Jr. of Shelby, and Kathy and Albert Cook of Lincolnton; and many nieces and nephews. He was retired from Rex Plant #2, attended Church of God of Prophecy, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Mae Grindle Woody. He is survived by his daughter, Elda Sue Beaver and husband Gerald of Gastonia; son, Richard Woody and wife Shirley of Gastonia; sister, Daisy Bradshaw of Gastonia; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
