A — Cross Connection Youth in unique camping program help needy families with home repair BY ABIGAIL WOLFORD Staff Writer Carolina Cross Connection, a nondenomi- national ministry located in Casar which was developed by the United Methodist Church, will be running camps for youth and adults this summer. The campers will help with minor home repair in the area. Camp teams are made up of small groups of youth who are at least going into 9th grade and adults. Teams will be working during one of the four weeks the camp is open: June 8-14, June 22- 28, July 6-12, and July 20-26. While the ministry already has enough teams to do the work, they are currently short on work that needs to be done. They are trained by a contractor to do work like shingling, flooring, painting, or general yard work. : Typically, the campers work on houses that are referred to them by the Department of Social Services, home health organ- izations, or other service organizations in the commu- nity. They visit the homes several times to determine the types of issues need to be addressed on the home. They also need to determine whether the problem will be something the campers will be able to handle. No reli- gious affiliation is required to receive aid. During the week, the campers focus on the five needs of the people they Stained Glass Banker's Lamp w/Intricate Design Cast Base Has Matching % Inlaid Stained Glass LZ Regier Retail = 149.95 Lamp Outlet = 39.99 Limited Quantity - Lithia Inn Rd. The campers will come from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, New Jersey, Virginia, and West Virginia. Katherine Biggers, the camp director, is originally from the Charlotte area and served as a camper for seven summers before becoming a member of the staff three summers ago. This is her first year as the camp direc- tor. She said the campers mainly use actions to demonstrate their faith dur- ing the week. She said one of her favorite quotes is “Preach the Gospel to all the world, and if necessary, use words.” “Actions without words are so much stronger than words with no action to back them up,” she said. Campers work from - approximately 9-5 each day on the service projects and then participate in the evening activities at the camp. They often play vol- leyball, swim, and attend worship services in the evening. Campers eat together and sleep in the bunk beds at the camp. Carolina Cross Connection is a spin-off of two organiza- tions, Appalachian Service Project and Mountain TOP, which are primarily based in Tennessee and Virginia. “Those are great pro- grams, but there's an equal need in North Carolina,” said Biggers. Carolina Cross Connection was formed as a way to meet those needs. The min- istry is now in its 16th sea- son. The ministry, which began in Casar, is now locat- "ed in five other areas as well: Lenoir, West Jefferson, Bostic, Franklin, and Misenheimer.
