Students attending Governor's School are nomi- nated by their local school superintendent, charter school director or private school headmaster. Each school system is allotted a certain number of students based on its 10th and 11th grade populations. Students are nominated in one of 11 areas including art, choral music, social science, English, French, instrumen- tal music, mathematics, nat- ural sciences and Spanish. Boiling Springs Manager, Greg McGinnis, talked with the students about a variety of things to be considered when planning a city. Throughout the question and answer ses- sion, discussion took place regarding the use of local, state, and federal budgeting funds, handling pollution and water treatment, recycling and trash pickup, traffic flow, and building codes for residential, business, recreation, and industrial planning. Students were then introduced to a variety of problems and began to plan and build Riddle City. The completed model was on display at the KMMS awards assembly. Participating the building of Riddle City were Halie Calvert, Brianna Grant, Ben Hart, Andrew Livsie, Megan Lowery, Chelsey McNeill, Edmundo Obando, Lorrin Plyler, Sara Roberts, Anthony Simpson, Josh Slycord, Telania Thomas, Angela Wall, and Laura Weigel. “We would like to thank the Cleveland County Arts Council for funding the “Trouble in Riddle City’ project,” said teacher Sarah Cole. “Not only was it a fun activity in which the students displayed their artistic ability, but it also provided an opportunity for students to work together in improving their communication and problem-solving skills.” 807-3986.
